1&1 Internet Named Best Web Hosting Company for 2005

All it really means is that 1&1 had the most money to spend on advertising on Hostreview.com

And not only on HostReview. I read eWeek, Baseline and other magazines from Ziff Davis Media, and I don't see one issue without 1&1 ads in it. The advertising to nearly 2M tech subscribers can be very expensive, and they usually have pages and pages of it...
1&1 is not a public company, is it?

Are you meaning that only publics companies can waste such advertising budgets without considerding the loss? :forK:

Just kidding ;)

Their budget for breaking into the North American market must have been huge.

3 years of free hosting for anyone who wanted to sign up plus a $3million ad campaign in one of the computer magazines, I forget which one.

With the way AOL was wasting marketing dollars, yes. :)

Ouch, i was not aware of this. If that's true, i mean not an Urban Legend, then this is painfull.

Some taxpayers are still wondering where their taxes leave. ;)

I'd be interested to see what 1&1 is doing for growth at the moment.
During their promotion they signed up over 100 thousand free (3 year) clients.

Before that promotion even started they were NetCraft's fastest growing hosting business.
For the period of October 2003-April 2004 they increased from 13,989 servers to 21,886 servers. Yes, that is servers, not clients.

By "public company" I think Art meant having shareholders and being publically traded in the stock markets, not "owned by the government".
