The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is accusing Google of abusing its power in the digital advertising market. The CMA’s provisional findings claim Google favors its own adtech services, giving it an unfair advantage over competitors. This investigation joins others by the European Commission and US Department of Justice, all questioning Google’s dominance in the ad sector.
Google plays several roles in adtech, from offering ad-buying tools like Google Ads to running an ad exchange (AdX) and a publisher ad server (DoubleClick for Publishers). The CMA argues this allows Google to prioritize its own services, making it hard for rivals to compete. This, in turn, limits the options available to advertisers and publishers seeking better deals.
Juliette Enser, interim Executive Director of Enforcement at the CMA, stressed how critical competition is for consumers and businesses. She noted that digital advertising helps many companies keep their content free or affordable. When competition is restricted, it can raise costs across the board.
Google, however, defends its practices. Dan Taylor, Google’s VP of Global Ads, rejected the CMA’s claims, saying its ad auctions remain fair. According to Taylor, the highest bid always wins, no matter where it comes from.
