The road to crème brulee

The time has come when I can finally sit back and relax a little. If you knew the level of pain and emotional distress that I have been through for the past ten months creating this blog, you’d understand me better. Broken promises, missed deadlines, lost investments – all turned out to be just a part of the overall experience.

I am not going to brag about it for too long, but let me just give you a little taste. It all started in late 2007 when we decided to work on the new HostingDiscussion.com version 2.0, or “SHE” (codename for Social Hosting Experience). As part of it, we wanted to develop a new type of media. A blog, social by design, became one of the popular ideas. In January 2008, the development of the blog finally kicked off. However, what was supposed to take a couple of months, took over ten to build. In all my years of Internet experience, I have never had such a miserable time dealing with failed promises and missed deadlines. It took two designers, two developers and eight months before we finally hit the jackpot with a responsive, skilful and truly experienced developer who took charge of the chaos.

Come to think about it now, it is amazing how flooded the Internet’s leading talent marketplaces such as SitePoint are with individuals who call themselves professionals, yet later have a hard time fixing issues real professionals would consider basic. What shocked me the most is that chosen by me people presented themselves as pros with agency years behind them. And no, their time wasn’t priced low either.

All these years I lived by the rule that you get what you pay for. It looks as though the rule, when it comes to future hiring, is up for a reform, even if only in my sole mind.

In the meantime, what counts is the end result. The blog is here and it makes me reach for another crème brulee as I celebrate the fact. It is better be worth it! The blog, that is, not crème brulee.
