Stack Infrastructure has secured $4 billion to help grow its data centers in the U.S. and Canada. This funding will mainly aid in the development of the massive 1GW Stafford Technology Campus in Virginia, as well as other projects in Portland, Oregon, and Toronto, Canada.
While the company hasn’t disclosed who provided the financing, it’s a type of green investment. This means the funds are meant for projects with environmental benefits. This implies Stack’s new projects might include eco-friendly features, but exact details aren’t available yet.
Matt VanderZanden, the President of Stack Americas, spoke about the important expansion of the company in Virginia. Virginia is famous worldwide as a major hub for data centers. Matt explained that Stack is very good at getting a lot of funding and delivering high-quality digital infrastructure. He strongly emphasized Stack’s dedication to expanding strategically.
Initially announced in January, the Stafford Technology Campus will be located on a 500-acre site near Interstate 95. It will have space for up to 19 data centers and six 300MW substations, provided by Dominion Energy. Stack promotes this campus as bringing economic and environmental benefits but has not yet provided details on its sustainability practices.
Besides Virginia, Stack is expanding in other significant markets. In Portland, the company is enlarging two data centers, adding 12MW to its POR01 site and a significant 150MW to its POR03 campus. In Toronto, Stack launched an 8MW data center in 2023 and plans to expand it to 48MW eventually.
Currently, Stack operates or is developing about 4GW of data center capacity worldwide, positioning itself as a significant player in digital infrastructure. The company also plans an additional 6GW for the future, showing its aim to meet the rising demand for cloud services and AI computing power.
As the digital economy grows rapidly, this funding underscores a shift toward more environmentally friendly infrastructure in the industry. However, Stack will need to be more transparent about its sustainability efforts to satisfy the increasing expectations of environmentally conscious investors and clients.
