Spark New Zealand is strengthening its collaboration with Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) by incorporating HPE’s GreenLake platform. This move is part of Spark’s efforts to modernize digitally. They are adopting a flexible IT approach, which helps them improve how they work and manage their technology effectively.
Using HPE GreenLake, Spark plans to enhance its cloud capabilities. They want to seamlessly connect public and private cloud systems. Mark Beder, who oversees enterprise and government customers at Spark, said this partnership will reduce IT costs and ensure their systems stay up-to-date with developments in automation and artificial intelligence. He highlighted that the addition of HPE GreenLake’s hybrid cloud management from Morpheus will simplify provisioning of workloads, eventually enabling an optimized and more user-friendly experience for both Spark and its clients.
This tactical change fits into Spark’s overall cost-reduction program, the SPK-26 Operate Programme, which is centered on integrating AI and automation into its business. The company is aiming to reduce operational and staff costs by as much as NZ$100 million (US$57 million) in the current financial year, with estimated savings of NZ$140 million (US$79.8 million) by 2027.
Spark’s continued investment in digital infrastructure continues to strengthen its presence in New Zealand’s expanding data center sector. During the initial half of 2024, the company has spent NZ$15 million (US$9 million) on increasing digital services in Waikato and procured the data center of University of Waikato.
Apart from this, Spark has set ambitious targets of increasing its presence in data centers, such as a new 10MW hub at Auckland North Shore and another new 10MW expansion for its Takanini data center, which completed in 2024.
With 22.3MW of current data center capacity and a development pipeline totaling up to 118MW, Spark is establishing itself as a market leader in New Zealand’s cloud and data infrastructure market. With the integration of HPE GreenLake, the company is enhancing its capacity to enable enterprises to access scalable and cost-effective cloud solutions.
