Microsoft’s widely-used Outlook email client is hitting a serious bump in the road, with users across Europe and now the U.S. reporting significant problems. The software giant recently acknowledged issues with its New Outlook desktop app, specifically citing crashes, unreceived emails, and excessive memory consumption.
Microsoft explained, “We’re investigating an issue in which users may experience crashes, not receive emails, or see high memory usage.” These issues first surfaced among European users, but recent reports show the problems spreading to the U.S., particularly on the East Coast.
One user described the situation as “spreading across the country like the common cold.” Confusion reigns as no major updates or changes had been applied to systems experiencing the issue, making it even more perplexing for users and organizations alike.
Microsoft engineers are now deep into the diagnostic process. They are analyzing data and service telemetry to pinpoint what may be a memory management flaw. The company assured users that a fix is in the works, and they’re simulating the problem internally to develop a comprehensive solution.
Despite these efforts, frustration has mounted. Social media and outage-tracking sites, like Downdetector, reveal widespread disruption still persists.
However, Microsoft recently rolled out a quick fix: restart Outlook. “We’ve applied a config change and telemetry confirms we’ve mitigated the impact. Users should refresh or restart their sessions,” Microsoft reported.
As businesses and professionals rely heavily on Outlook, the urgency to resolve these issues is palpable.
