Nationwide Building Society, one of the UK’s largest banks, has transitioned its on-premises IT estate to HPE GreenLake, embracing a hybrid cloud model designed to enhance agility, scalability, and cost-efficiency. This move is a significant milestone in Nationwide’s hybrid cloud journey, which began in 2018.
HPE GreenLake, an edge-to-cloud solution, brings cloud-like functionality to on-premises IT by deploying HPE servers and storage directly within the organization’s infrastructure. The adoption reflects Nationwide’s commitment to meeting evolving customer expectations with cutting-edge technology.
“In today’s world, our customers demand seamless, always-on service alongside innovative tools to better manage their finances,” said Paul Walsh, director of Infrastructure & Service Delivery at Nationwide. “Our hybrid cloud strategy ensures we remain competitive while exceeding customer expectations. HPE GreenLake is core to this vision, allowing us to deliver faster, more resilient services and accelerate developer innovation.”
The implementation of GreenLake Management Services enables Nationwide to automate and orchestrate infrastructure processes while delivering infrastructure as code. This strategic move allows the bank’s teams to focus on high-value activities, driving efficiency and innovation.
One of the standout benefits of this migration is cost reduction. Nationwide expects to cut its IT expenses by at least 30%, thanks to GreenLake’s consumption-based pricing model, which ensures the bank pays only for the capacity it uses.
Matt Harris, senior vice president and managing director at HPE, praised the partnership, stating, “Nationwide’s modernization journey showcases how HPE GreenLake transforms legacy systems into modern hybrid cloud platforms. This transition ensures unmatched control, security, and growth flexibility—areas where public cloud alone cannot suffice.”
Nationwide also continues leveraging Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Form3 for its broader cloud-based needs. Meanwhile, the bank maintains and seeks to expand its data center in Swindon, reflecting a balanced approach to hybrid cloud architecture.
The shift underscores Nationwide’s dedication to creating a future-proof IT ecosystem, a strategy that sets it apart as a forward-thinking financial institution while redefining service standards in the banking sector.
