Meta just locked in a six-year cloud contract with Google worth north of $10 billion. Not something you see every day, given how much these two usually compete head-to-head. The primary focus? AI infrastructure. Basically, Meta’s ramping up its backend to handle more advanced AI workloads, and Google’s cloud is getting the call. If you’re tracking the AI arms race, this deal’s a pretty loud signal—Meta’s all-in on scaling up, and apparently, Google’s the tech partner they trust to handle the heavy lifting.
The timing is notable. Just weeks ago, Mark Zuckerberg pledged that Meta would pour “hundreds of billions of dollars into compute” to pursue what he called the company’s mission of building superintelligence. That ambition has already translated into staggering capital expenditures, with Meta projecting $66 billion to $72 billion this year and hinting at an even sharper climb in 2026.
Much of that investment is funneling into massive data center projects. Meta’s first multi-gigawatt cluster, named Prometheus, is already underway, with another, called Hyperion, on the horizon. In the meantime, the company has resorted to unconventional methods, including deploying tent structures, to bring online temporary capacity at speed. Financing for this expansion is backed by firms such as Pimco and Blue Owl.
This latest contract really highlights Google’s expanding role in the hyperscale cloud sector. Google Cloud’s numbers are impressive—$13.6 billion in revenue for the quarter, up 32% compared to last year. The backlog has hit $106 billion, which is a pretty clear indicator that enterprise demand for Google’s cloud solutions isn’t slowing down any time soon. The deal with Meta follows Google Cloud’s agreement earlier this year with OpenAI, another rival in the AI space, which gained access to Google’s compute and custom TPU chips.
Both Google and Meta continue to post healthy results despite their rivalry in advertising. Meta’s revenue surged 22 percent to $47.5 billion in the latest quarter, while Google Cloud’s performance reaffirmed its role as a central pillar in Alphabet’s broader strategy.
What makes this partnership striking is less the financial scale and more the acknowledgment that even companies competing in core markets are willing to lean on each other when the demands of AI call for unprecedented levels of compute. For Meta, the road to superintelligence cannot be paved alone, and for Google, supplying the infrastructure may prove just as strategic as competing in the technology itself.
