In a significant move to future-proof its operations, Australian retail giant Coles Group has solidified a five-year partnership with Microsoft to integrate advanced cloud, AI, and Edge computing technologies into its business framework. This collaboration aims to bolster Coles’ digital transformation, enhance customer experiences, and diversify revenue streams.
The cornerstone of this partnership lies in developing an AI-as-a-Service platform powered by Microsoft’s Azure OpenAI Service. This platform is designed to provide tailored customer interactions while modernizing Coles’ IT infrastructure.
Additionally, the two companies will collaborate on the “Intelligent Edge Backbone,” a cutting-edge solution aimed at managing IoT devices across Coles’ operations.
John Cox, Coles’ Chief Technology Officer, expressed enthusiasm about the renewed partnership: “Microsoft’s innovative solutions will help us build a robust digital foundation, empowering us to deliver on our promise of helping Australians live and eat better every day.”
The relationship between Coles and Microsoft dates back to 2019 when Coles began transitioning its data to Microsoft’s cloud. Currently, over 70 percent of its data resides in Azure. This migration underscores Coles’ commitment to leveraging technology to enhance efficiency and customer-centric strategies.
Steven Worrall, Managing Director of Microsoft ANZ, highlighted the synergy between the two companies: “Coles exemplifies forward-thinking in retail. Together, we’ll harness cloud, AI, and Edge computing to drive transformation and stay ahead in an ever-evolving landscape.”
The partnership also marks Coles’ evolution from traditional data systems to an agile digital ecosystem. Notably, Coles collaborated with Palantir Technologies earlier this year to implement advanced team rostering capabilities, reducing employee churn by 25 percent.
This collaboration signals a new chapter for Coles, as it leverages cutting-edge technology to redefine customer engagement and operational excellence in the competitive retail sector.
