Bridgy Fed, a new social unite to boost the Open Social Web

In a significant step forward for the open social web, A New Social has emerged as a nonprofit organization committed to fostering innovation across decentralized networks. Anchored by Bridgy Fed, a pioneering project connecting Bluesky and the fediverse — the ecosystem powering platforms like Mastodon and Threads — this initiative seeks to unify developers, researchers, and industry leaders in reshaping digital connectivity.

Ryan Barrett, the creator of Bridgy Fed, initially launched the project to address the growing need for better integration between platforms. However, as interest in his work skyrocketed, he realized the necessity of additional support. Recognizing its potential, engineering leader Anuj Ahooja joined forces with Barrett to establish A New Social. This partnership provided the organizational structure essential for sustaining such an ambitious vision.

“With platforms evolving rapidly, we aim to build a future where digital ecosystems connect seamlessly, enabling users to benefit from a unified experience,” Barrett explained. Indeed, the project’s trajectory made it clear that structured backing was vital to its success.

In addition to its collaborative focus, A New Social is actively engaging key stakeholders, including Bluesky, Meta, and Mastodon, to foster dialogue and drive alignment. Furthermore, Ahooja emphasized the importance of collective action, noting, “By bringing platforms together, we ensure that our work delivers meaningful and lasting impact.”

The nonprofit is now recruiting a board of directors while also exploring funding opportunities through grants, industry investments, and crowdfunding. Initially, its efforts will center on Bridgy Fed. Over time, however, the organization plans to extend its support to other projects advancing decentralized protocols, such as Farcaster and nostr.

At the same time, these efforts align closely with broader movements to enhance the fediverse. Organizations like the Social Web Foundation (SWF) and the Independent Federated Trust & Safety (IFTAS) are also pursuing similar goals. Together, these initiatives aim to create a more connected and equitable internet.

Ultimately, through collective innovation and strategic partnerships, A New Social positions itself as a powerful catalyst for a truly unified and open internet. By promoting seamless digital interaction and collaboration, the organization paves the way for a brighter, more inclusive future for online communities.
