Backblaze strengthens Canadian presence with deployment at Cologix’s Toronto data center

Backblaze has made a major move to solidify its presence in Canada by starting operations at Cologix’s TOR3 digital edge data center in Toronto. This development not only helps Backblaze enhance the delivery of secure and compliant cloud storage but also ensures that businesses operating in Canada can comply with stringent data sovereignty regulations without sacrificing performance or cost-effectiveness.

By establishing a presence in TOR3, Backblaze benefits from direct proximity to Cologix’s massive interconnection community, which offers several network providers and a gigabit fiber connection to TOR1, the largest carrier hotel in the nation. Consequently, enterprises are able to process and store data smoothly without compromising on adherence to changing national policies.

With government, finance and healthcare making data security a growing priority, the timing of Backblaze’s growth could not have been more opportune. As these sectors require that data be stored within Canada, Backblaze’s location within TOR3 fills those requirements instantly. Furthermore, by equating affordability with great performance, the company is making it easier for business to transition over to cloud-based storage.

This partnership with Cologix, as explained by Chris Opat, Backblaze Senior Vice President of Cloud Operations, enables businesses to store data in-country without paying exorbitant fees. He stressed that Backblaze cloud storage services are consistent with the increasing requirements of global companies that need to balance compliance and operational efficiency.

In the meantime, Cologix is further establishing itself as a top data center solutions provider in Canada. TOR3 data center, with high-performance colocation and interconnection capability, offers Tier III certification, power redundant infrastructure, biometric security, and SOC 1, SOC 2, HIPAA, and PCI-DSS compliance. Thus, organizations are able to enjoy robust security options along with seamless connectivity.

Sean Maskell, President and General Manager of Cologix Canada, noted the importance of Backblaze joining TOR3, cementing the facility as a central point of cloud storage and digital infrastructure. He noted that the agreement aligns with Cologix’s vision of delivering state-of-the-art digital infrastructure while helping companies achieve important data protection needs.

Today, Cologix has 22 data centers in Toronto, Montréal, and Vancouver with 94MW of power and over a million square feet of space. Further, the network of the company consists of 350 connectivity partners, over 200 cloud providers, and direct connections to large public cloud platforms like AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud.

With cloud adoption speeding up and compliance expectations increasing, collaborations such as that between Cologix and Backblaze are defining the digital landscape in Canada’s future. Companies now enjoy better access to secure, scalable, and high-performance cloud storage options and can fulfill their infrastructure demands without exposing data outside of Canadian jurisdiction.
