Backblaze, a trailblazer in cloud storage, has unveiled its new data center in Toronto, Ontario, marking its Canada East (CA East) location. This move signals a strategic leap forward as the company caters to businesses requiring high-performance, compliance-focused cloud storage.
Canada’s cloud services market is booming, with a projected annual growth rate of 20%, driven by demand from sectors like government, healthcare, and finance. These industries frequently require data to remain within national borders due to stringent sovereignty laws. Backblaze’s Canadian expansion addresses these requirements, offering localized solutions to meet compliance and performance needs.
“Data sovereignty and compliance are increasingly critical for businesses in Canada,” stated Gleb Budman, CEO of Backblaze. “Our new presence in the region not only ensures adherence to legal standards but also delivers faster, more reliable services to clients—at a fraction of the cost compared to hyperscalers.”
Further enhancing its Canadian foothold, Backblaze has partnered with Opti9 Technologies, Canada’s largest Veeam Cloud Service Provider (VCSP). Opti9 will exclusively deliver Backblaze’s B2 Reserve and Powered by Backblaze programs. “Together, we aim to offer cost-effective, high-performance solutions tailored to Canadian businesses,” said Cory Mac Donell, Opti9’s VP of Sales & Business Development.
Backblaze’s expansion aligns with the growing shift toward multi-cloud and hybrid strategies, giving businesses freedom from vendor lock-in while maintaining local security, compliance, and scalability. As Canada’s cloud market continues to evolve, this partnership positions Backblaze as a key player in shaping the country’s digital landscape.
