Automattic introduces VaultPress for WordPress backup

The founders of the incredibly popular WordPress platform have introduced a revolutionary service that will allow users of the open-source software the ability to easily backup their data via a secure service dubbed VaultPress. Currently available as a private beta for testing, VaultPress is built on the Automattic grid, the same that powers WordPress.com and the millions of blogs hosted there.

“I’m very excited about this service because it is the first step toward my dream of every WordPress (site), regardless of where it’s hosted, to have best-in-the-world network (cloud?) services that take all the worry and hassle away. People invest so much time, money, effort, blood, sweat, and tears into their WordPress-powered sites — they deserve for that to be 100 percent secure.” – Matt Mullenweg, WordPress co-founder

When this latest Automattic service is launched to the public, it will reliably and regularly backup more than 10 million web sites powered via the WordPress.com hosting site, immediately securing the nearly endless amount of data published from both general bloggers and large companies alike. Being tailored specifically to WordPress, the VaultPress service also has the ability to backup settings and many customizations made to a WordPress installation alongside standard data. Ease-of-use is promised to be equal to or exceeding that found in other Automattic products with only the need for a single plugin installation to get started. The ability to remotely protect WordPress installations via VaultPress is also in the works, potentially allowing protection against even zero-day vulnerabilities on-the-fly.

With WordPress growing rapidly as both a hosted solution at WordPress.com and as a standalone platform able to be easily installed in self-hosted scenarios, the popular software is also proving itself to be more than just a blogging tool. Since its initial release in 2003, WordPress has evolved from a simple blogging platform to a full-featured CMS used by average Joes and corporate bigwigs alike with customer communication a particularly fast-growing use of the software. With hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of instances of WordPress used for official company sites and professional portfolios, web hosts around the world are working to be sure that their services are not only compatible with it, but often tailored around it.
