AirTrunk expands in Malaysia with new AI-optimized data center

AirTrunk is expanding its footprint in Malaysia with JHB2, its second hyperscale data center in Johor’s Iskandar Puteri region. The new facility will provide over 270 megawatts (MW) of capacity, supporting the rising demand for cloud and AI infrastructure. This investment strengthens Malaysia’s role as a regional digital hub.

JHB2 follows the success of JHB1, which launched in July 2024 with over 150 MW. Together, both projects represent a RM9.7 billion (A$3.5 billion) investment, bringing AirTrunk’s total capacity in Malaysia to more than 420 MW. This expansion caters to global tech firms looking for scalable and energy-efficient solutions.

CEO Robin Khuda emphasized AirTrunk’s commitment to Malaysia’s long-term digital and economic growth. The location of JHB2 enables seamless cross-border connectivity with Singapore, aligning with the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone. Businesses will benefit from improved scalability and regional integration.

JHB2 is designed to support AI workloads. It will use advanced liquid cooling technology to manage high-density computing while reducing energy consumption. The data center will also have a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) rating of 1.25 and offer renewable energy options. Additionally, AirTrunk is exploring the use of treated greywater to support Johor’s sustainability efforts.

As part of its Net Zero 2030 goal, AirTrunk is increasing its green energy initiatives. The company has already deployed one of Southeast Asia’s largest onsite solar installations at JHB1. It also established Malaysia’s first Virtual Power Purchase Agreement (VPPA) for renewable energy.

With JHB2, AirTrunk is partnering with Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) to fast-track high-voltage power delivery. A new substation, built on land provided by AirTrunk, will further enhance energy resilience in the region.

AirTrunk is investing in local talent in addition to infrastructure. Malaysians make up about 90% of its workforce, and they are offered competitive pay and chances for professional advancement. Through digital literacy initiatives and scholarships at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), the corporation also promotes STEM education.

Local leaders have praised AirTrunk’s commitment. The Menteri Besar of Johor, Dato’ Onn Hafiz Ghazi, highlighted that the project boosts the economy while creating valuable employment and training opportunities. This aligns with the state’s vision for Maju Johor 2030.

With JHB2, AirTrunk’s data center network now spans 12 locations across Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, and Singapore. This expansion increases its total capacity to nearly 1.8 gigawatts (GW), reinforcing Malaysia’s role in cloud computing and AI innovation.
