Internet leaders unite in Washington as i2Coalition launches global trust certification for hosting providers

The group Internet Infrastructure Coalition (i2Coalition) met in Washington, D.C., this week during a very uncertain time for the U.S. government. They made it clear that they want to be the ones to keep the internet open and safe to use. Members of the coalition, despite the ongoing partial government shutdown, engaged in very important discussions concerning digital policy, infrastructure resilience, and global trust standards.

The conference was the first public presentation of the Secure Hosting Alliance (SHA) Trust Seal, a credentialing framework designed to feature those hosting providers that maintain good practices of transparency, accountability, and resilience. Facing an era where the scrutiny of the reliability of online systems is increasing, the return to users’ trust in digital infrastructure through this initiative is a concrete move.

Christian Dawson, Executive Director of the i2Coalition, mentioned how the coalition remained focused on its goals despite the external interruptions. He noted that the Internet’s reliability depends on the continued cooperation of private-sector providers who form its backbone. “Our members keep the Internet running, no matter what happens in Washington,” he said. “Through the SHA Trust Seal, we’re giving the industry a clear, visible way to demonstrate trust and responsible practice.”

The certification centers on four main areas: transparent company policies, proactive response to abuse, technical reliability, and lawful data handling procedures. By setting these standards, the SHA Trust Seal provides a universal guideline that hosting providers can follow to ensure ethical and secure operations worldwide.

David Snead, Director of the Secure Hosting Alliance, emphasized that the seal represents more than symbolic approval. He described it as a practical framework that organizations can adopt to show measurable integrity. “This is about accountability,” Snead said. “It gives providers a way to prove that they are committed to a secure, open Internet that users can rely on.”

The gathering will conclude with the annual Internet Leadership Awards, recognizing figures who have contributed to protecting and advancing global Internet freedom. Honorees include Techdirt founder Mike Masnick, privacy advocate Becky Burr, Automattic’s Jesse Friedman, BigScoots’ James Webb, and ITU Secretary-General Doreen Bogdan-Martin.

Through initiatives like the SHA Trust Seal, the i2Coalition continues to reinforce the foundation of a trusted Internet, ensuring that innovation and digital opportunity remain accessible even in times of political or institutional uncertainty.
