Is advertising at WebHostingTalk worth it?

The last few times I've visited WHT, the homepage and New Posts pages have been completely broken and borderline unusable. I think this occurs when the "I'm under attack" mode at Cloudflare is enabled, but if I was an advertiser I'd probably be fairly upset with this. I'm surprised that with...

Does Magento really require specific hosting environment?

The last Magento website I worked with had to be scaled up to a dedicated server to perform half decently. This was a while ago so things may have improved. WooCommerce has it's warts and I've seen scaling issues with stores with 1M+ products but would still prefer it over Magento any day.

What are the biggest advantages to colocation?

I always contemplate just buying a 1U rackmount console but the price is absurd for what it is. I saw on WHT a suggestion to use a USB powered portable display and that's something I can get behind! Might be something I do if I end up cursing at a crash cart again.

What are the biggest advantages to colocation?

Every once in a while, when I'm using a crashcart that can only display in red, or a bi-lingual keyboard where the pipe (|) character gives me a tilde, I question colocating. But giving up the control over how quickly repairs to hardware can be done, how servers are built, and how they are...

    Nagios monitoring

Agreed about Zabbix (even tho Zabbix is itself massive). Other potentially simpler alternatives is Munin (tho alerting on it is poor) and Monit (with alerting being fairly primitive). I built an entire platform of my just to _not_ run Nagios.

What type of billing system are you using / prefer ?

How was the switch to WiseCP? I'm mostly stuck on WHMCS because of momentum. I am not sure what I want to do with 15+ years of billing history.

Redis Object Cache in Web Hosting

I've used it occasionally. In recent memory, on a _very_ large WooCommerce install. Typically during my work in software development, Redis is very frequently used to bandaid over a bad query, so in similar manner with WordPress, I start looking for those. This is especially important on...

Help me speed up HostingDiscussion' WordPress-based news site

I wouldn't be surprised if this was a _huge_ portion of your TTFB cost. I love some classic CGI for simplicity, but performant it is typically not.

    IPv4 blocks

Most things today can probably be deployed with IPv6 and just a 6to4/4to6 translation layer at the edge. If I don't need email or am using a smarthost, almost everything I deploy now is just single-stack IPv6. It makes things simple IMHO. One notable callout that's probably only relevant to...

Are there any downfalls to upgrading the server to PHP 8.0?

Depending on how you're using WordPress, sometimes the indexes on the posts table are woefully inadequate or outright missing. Also, mySQL/MariaDB has some cardinality in how the indexes are used, which is worth looking at too. I notice this a lot with larger WooCommerce users, but I can see it...

    Seeking Advice on Website Design

Lighthouse Lighthouse Lighthouse. Google gives away this awesome, free tool, and I find most people have never used it once. It's all sorts of awesome packaged into a very clean interface. Seriously, use it.

    Effective Advertising

I've found the best results in being where my target audience is. Everything else has been OK but nothing compared to actively engaging them where they are comfortable. For hosting, this might be through your local business groups. Compete against the bigger companies where they don't want to -...

    I've been trying reseller hosting

If I had one recommendation, it would be to run it through Lighthouse and improve the areas of concern it flags. I did it for you it scored 68/100 in both Accessibility and Best Practices. 91/100 in SEO.

WordCamp Canada comes to Ottawa. Sold out.

I wish I could have made it to this one but alas I was unable. We used to have a regional WordCamp that was put on annually and I always found it well run with a good speaker line up. It had an amazing dollar-to-value ratio as well.
