Why are there so few women in hosting?

Why are there so few women involved in the hosting industry?
From what I have seen, about 5% of companies are owned by women in the industry.

Im sure it would be more than that but thats just from my experience.
I have seen very few women that have their own hosting business.

Anyone know why that is?
Anything to do with them being smart enough not to spend so much time looking after others then a company comes along with their unlimited hard drives and steals their customers :D

Its typical for this type of industry. Look at many tech sector markets, most are male dominated - thats just the way the cookie has crumbled.

Yeah I think most people in the tech industry would be male, if you think about everything tech related Im sure you would notice its mainly males involved.

Even in local shops which are tech related most employees are male.

Women always seem to get stressed out about computers a lot more, and dont have the patience, which is required.

I wonder how many failed women's hosting companies there are?

I think most women (that i've come across) are just plain bored with the subject and there isn't much sense starting a company doing something you have no basic interest in.

With companies I've done work for in IT I've seen some female IT employees, all of which perfectly competent - but it falls down when you ask one for a hand with a rack mount UPS, or can you lift the back end of this 16U server. A lot of them went for combo jobs of half IT half admin after getting hit with that. Avoidance of rugby players legs syndrome.

Well, this could be a touchy subject. I don't really know why. Maybe there are not as many interested in this type of work or just don't have time. Shopping, this, that :-)

Hehe - I have noticed that women are interested but in different areas - so maybe just a niche thing :)

I was gonna reply to one then the other then realized I would have been replying to all of them, You gents are very amusing. There are more of us than you realize, most just lurk on the forums if they use them all at, and the other half are too busy signing paychecks. Did someone say Wokachingman. Freckled

I think its better to have some more women in the hosting industry and I dont see any problems with it.
Good to see a woman member posting here on HR :)
There most likely are more female members that just havent said or havent posted.

Is that signing paychecks for yourself Freckled :)

I have the pleasure to work with women in our IT department. They are very knowledgeable and much more focussed than some male counterparts. I think it is how managers and company's in general handle these things. If there would be more female IT Managers, the ratio would go up.

For me, I figure: I'm here. I work quite a bit with computers. I happen to have started my own company which primarily works with computers. My gender shouldn't be a factor, so why continually make a big issue of it?

Gender proportions in various professional fields is one of those things that needs to be simultaneously made a show of and ignored. Someone's sex is an external factor that has nothing to do with the knowledge a person may have, how competent they are at problemsolving, or how capable they are at continual learning.

In all of my computer technical related work and schooling over the years, I would say that a majority of 95% were male. I think this is mainly because guys get adicted to computers early on playing video games on them... then they want to get better FPS and a lower ping so they start upgrading their machines... then we end up getting on IRC/AIM to keep in contact with our gaming buddies, then we end up surfing the web for random stuff and trying things out waiting for our friends to get online... so we can start gaming again. Then we always download music and apps to manilpulate our favorite songs into phone rings etc.

I dont think thats the main reason. But more than half of the male computer junkies out there are gamers.

I dont think woman have the patience and/or want to waste their time with the computer. I know that when I use my computer for more than about 2 hours straight at home, my girlfriend gets on my back and starts chewing me out saying I spend more time on the computer than I do with her. I'm sure all you guys out there get this too
