Which do you prefer, Windows or Linux?

Linux

Hey Guys,

I have to go with Linux. I love how easy it is to use. SSH is a little difficult to use. However, it is faster and PHP is with it as well. Overall security is great.

I prefer FreeBSD over everything else. It firstly is very secure upon initial installation, it can be easily customizable, it works extremely well in high loads, and it is continuously being improved upon. FreeBSD 6.0 will be excellent with a few features and that have been added (port upgrades and upgrade programs in general). It allows you to run with Linux Compatibility and basically it is just great (especially installing jails :)).

Hmm. I'm going to look into that

My personal choice for a server OS is Linux, because it fits the needs of our customer demographic.

My personal choice for home or work PC is Windows.

At home I run nothing below Windows 2000, and have no Linux machines, however our web server is based on Fedora. The reason for the difference is in the web hosting industry, more clients and more applications seem to like, use, or rely upon Linux based hosting, while in the personal/office environment most applications, and employees require/know the Windows environment.

So really, I prefer both, personally I use Windows for everything sans web hosting that I do.

I would have to go with Linux for running a web hosting server, for a number of reasons:
1- There are lots of experts in Linux, finding an admin is easy.
2- Most dedicted server companies offer Linux servers.
3- Cliets love cPanel and fantastico, and those only come on Linux
4- hmm, because its the dominant hosting platform

Do you prefer Windows or Linux? Please state why. Thanks for the feedback in advance!!

Linux is much better and is a preference in the Hosting Industry... there tends to be more Control Panel's for Linux then there is for Windows. cPanel & DirectAdmin being the most popular. Currently cPanel is in ALPHA mode for Windows for cPanel Staff to test and report.

However if you are going to host Gaming Servers the preformance is better in a Windows Box.

Hope this Helps.

I have tested game servers on RedHat Linux, FreeBSD with Linux Compatibility and with Windows 2k3.

All of the Servers had the following specs:
Pentium 4 3.0 GHz, 1 GB RAM, 80 GB HD, 100 Mbps network card link

Games tested: Medal of Honor: Allied Assault, Call of Duty/Call of Duty: United Offensive, Battlefield 1942.

The FreeBSD and Linux server was able to run the highest amount of game servers without seeing performance issues within the game servers themselves. Linux performance did have more moments of being choppy duing the gameplay. The FreeBSD box seemed to run flawlessly and ran longer without having to have a reboot. Linux Box rebooted every 3-4 days (usually when performance issues were seen), FreeBSD box reboot weekly or even longer at moments.

Windows had to run less games on the box due to horrible performance issues in game for the users. Windows needed a reboot on a daily basis.

Yes Windows has more compatible games on the market but saying that Windows is a better environment is not true ;).

Yeah I am the same, I prefer Linix for hosting servers, but windows for everything else such as home use.

Linux Computers suck though :crash:

I still feel that Linux is the best for web server due to easy management and use less server resources. Linux server is also much stable and not easily corrupted and lower cost to operate compare to Windows that require high licensing cost.

If you are having Web server like Tomcat OR Apache you can use OS like Linux (all flavours), Sun OS, Unix. and for IIS you can use Windows ( NT onwards).

That;s your opinoun. There has been many polls for Gaming Servers about Windows Vs. Linux and Windows has had doubled the vote.

I use a Quad Opteron 842 with 4096MB DDRAM Memory. 160 IDE (2) Hard Drives, and a 100mbit Uplink Server; and I have used both Operating Systems the preformance is much better on Windows. For myself and Customers.

However, enough rambling on a topic that should be discussed somewhere else ;).

Alright, I have another question. Is there a specific reason why you do not use Windows for a web server? I have my own opinion that I have already stated and my own ideas but is there a specific thing?

If that questions went towards me, I never used Windows before, I always heard Linux was better and that many people refer it. our company, InvertHost, plans to offer Windows as well with Linux. Right now, Linux seems to have the best vote. Plus cPanel can run on Linux, and not Windows.

Yes there is, one name...Bill Gates :D. Just Joking :).

But seriously W2K3 servers are pretty decent. The only reason I do not go with Windows is because of basically the many security holes that windows contains, knows about yet acknowledges in a very slowly timed fashion. Linux updates seem just to be more pro active and the developers seem to build upon the community. Windows has too many propriatary things on their services which also just frankly do not appeal to me personally. I'm not saying that I will never run a Windows Server, we are actually in the process of planning for it, but if I had a choice Linux is just more stable and can take a lot more of a beating than windows. Security and Stability is my main priority for the customers and Linux has a much better record on that (although Windows is getting there).

I would say Linux. Linux is free for desktop or home use, Windows is expensive. Linux is freely available through open source under Gnu license. So basically Linux is cost effective than windows, its much more secured and has more stability than windows. In hosting business the market share of linux is high compared to windows because it is free of cost and has some good features.

I second that!

Our web servers run on Linux because it is more secure and stable than Windows. Also, cPanel and Fantastico can run on Linux, and clients love those.

I prefer Windows 2000 and up for home/work use simply because the software I need to use is made for Windows.
