What is the best hard drive?

I personally like Western Digital and tend to use them in every computer that I build. Recently I purchased the WD Raptor drive and it is extremely fast! What drives do you all prefer?

I like WD as well.

I'm still cheap, so most likey whichever Best Buy has on the cheap if I'm building a personal computer.

Uh Oh! He said the BB word! LOL! I can't stand Best Buy! I hate going into that store, infact I used to work there and I still hate it! As far as HD deals try newegg.com on for size or ewiz.com those two have provided me with the best deals money can buy!

I'm living in Smallville. The nearest Best Buy is about 50 miles away, the nearest Circuit City, CompUSA, (...) is 75 or so.

I could do online...I just don't :/

OH well then that is an exception!

So far I've never had a Seagate fail on me [my oldest being just 120mb] and while I like WD, three have gone bye bye in the last 4 years. Don't even think about mentioning fujistu to me... :@

Wow that is something to be proud of. Are these Seagate hard drives in servers?

I personally like WD. Every drive I've had with them has never failed.. and I still have one from back in the early 90's.. 80MB that still runs. :)

I just got a Seagate 200gb for $100.00 (after $50.00 rebate) at outpost.com a few weeks ago. Not sure if the deal is still there, but the hard drive is excellent.

I only run WD these days. I do also like the raptor drives. I have had such bad luck with Maxtor, and also Samsung ( I know, please don't stone me). So now I run WD and that's it. So far I haven't had one die on me in the last 4 years.

Maxtor for me, i've heard some horror stories about WD in the past although i've also heard some good things.
The sound of that company name scares me. After being around the retail environment, the number one problems customers had always revolved around a Maxtor. I am glad you are having good luck with them but I will stick with my WD and Seagates anytime! Right now all of the servers I have built run one or the other, but never a Maxtor!

I have had problems with WD drives in the past. I have not had a problem in a long time. When the 8.4GB WD drives came out, I went through 5 of them in a 3 week period. I have also lost all my data because the drive crashed with a few 100GB drives.

I've tried just about every brand out there and Seagate has the best products out there. Stable, very fast, and they don't make a sound. I have a few Maxtor drives which have always worked well, but they are extremely noisy.

Here's a blast from the past, remember when 3.2gigs was the big thing. I have a fujitsu 3.2 gigs from '97 that is still ticking, and for me it is the best hard drive :-)
Western Digital did hold a place near and dear especially their Caviar line, but I have opted for Maxtor/SeaGate.
On my desktop I have Maxtor, and it seems to be holding steady, but I was under the impression that Maxtor & SeaGate were one in the same? I may have misunderstood but can anyone clarify.

I guess it seems to be boiling down to liking what you've had luck with (no duh, right) and having an aversion for those you've had a problem with. I had problems early on with Maxtor, so I'm a Western Digital and Seagate guy currently.

I can not stand some of these SATA drives that require an extrernal power source. I like the regular western ditial drives because they can be powered from the SATA port on the motherboard.

We need to come up with a section for technology deals! Nice find on the 200 gb hard drive!

Definitely! I second this suggestion. It may not be directly related to everything else on this board but I think we have a good market interested in this sort of information here.
