What is difference between add-on domain and sub domain?

an addon domain is usually another top level domain on the same account, it is different from the domain you entered when signing up.

A sub domain is a part of the original domain that you entered when signing up.

Example:

you signed up for a webhosting account and you would like to have your site under the domain "domainA.com"

a sub domain would then be "sub.domainA.com"
An addon domain would be "domainB.com"

an addon domain is just as it says a domain that you have added to your account.
so rather than have say 4 domains with 4 separate control panels like

domain1.com/cpanel
domain2.com/cpanel
domain3.com/cpanel
domain4.com/cpanel

where you have to remember usernames and passwords for each you can simply have

domain1.com/cpanel

and then add the other 3 domains as addon domains where you can control from the same control panel and same FTP etc.

a subdomain is simple a directory of the main domain

domain1.com

so you could have a sales site that would be

domain1.com/sales or sales.domain1.com

Interesting fact

An addon domain is a functional domain that can be created from within your control panel or it is a domain that is added to your hosting account. To put it in simple way, think of it as having multiple hosting packages all sharing the same control panel where you create email, forwarders etc. - the same way you do for the main domain within your hosting account. In addition, addon domain will not function unless the domain name is registered with a valid registrar.

Whereas, Subdomain is the portion of a domain name. What's more, subdomains allows you to put content in your URL before your domain name, such as blog. or shop. For instance, if your domain name is agmwebhost.com, then the subdomain name could look something like this: blog.agmwebhost.com

Did that make sense? If yes, Cheers! :):)

This is where I don't like cPanel.

In DirectAdmin you don't have the Domain and Add-On Domains concept, you just have multiple domains, so that I can delete the original domain and still have the account. But that's just aesthetics, I suppose.

An addon domain is an additional domain added to your account, you can add as many as you want depend on the number of addon domain allow by your hosting provider while sub domain is an extension of name to your main domain e.g mydomain.com/myname or myname.mydomain.com

Addon domains are domains added to your hosting account so you can have more then one domain pointing to one web hosting account.
Sub domains are a sub name of the main domain. Like secure.example.com the main domain is example.com and the sub name is secure.example.com.

second domain can be hook to your main domain account. files are keep in a subdirectory. maindomain.com/seconddom

visitor see the same content on secondomain.com and maindomain.com/seconddom

Addon domain is a second main domain that can be created from within your control panel. This addon domain is new, which creates a new folder on your account so that you can host multiple domains from one control panel. A subdomain is created for the primary domain and attached to the new folder.

Hello,

A domain add-on is used when dealing at a web hosting level usually to have domain forward to folder in public_html folder for main account.

subdomain is the subpart or subsection of existing domain name
and add-on domain is a domain that is registered with hosting account which is used to host original website.

part 1 is right

But an add-on domain is a domain that you have added to your main hosting account.

i.e say you have the domain myfirstdomain.com and have this set up and running a website. You then buy the domain myseconddomain.com, so you can go and spend more money on another hosting account for this domain or you can just add this to the account of myfirstdomain.com.
so the domain myseconddomain.com will have its own website but will share the same control panel (Cpanel etc.) as myfirstdomain.com,
