What has been your biggest challenge/issue?

I want to apologize if I won't be specific but my biggest problem was always not having as much knowledge for solving problems quickly as I would like to. :) But I will say that I have very high standards.

Think that can be said for everyone. There are so many areas things can go wrong and no one knows everything.

as others have said this goes for everyone.

we have all our servers as managed server as we are well aware we do not know everything, but what we do is if we need the managed assistance we will always ask for a consise breakdown of how they fixed the issue and then we will place this in a file, so if it happenns again we have the solution at hand, so we learn to fix the issue ourselves which in turn is quicker than having to wait for managed techs to look and fix it, which makes our clients more happy

My biggest challenge?

Moving forward, continuing to grow and keep focused without loosing my 'mojo' as you could put it.
Technical issues and most other issues are easy to fix, google can help anyone lost and teach you anything you need to know.

But the real challenge is mentally, to running a hosting business and any business :)

My biggest challenge is not to give up.. When we first started there was months where we did not see no sign ups but a heck of a lot of views and visitors. So I tried very very hard not to quit and look at me now here. :) making a decent amount of money at the end of the month after I pay all my bills. i'm happy where I am but wish I could do way better.

I can handle just about anything that is thrown at me but trying to explain to my friends and family why I work so hard, how I do it and why I do it is another thing. Does anyone else run into "All you do is work" or "Why can you not take a random day off"?

My biggest challenge has always been lack of time to learn everything I want to learn. I now prioritize my time into manageable time frames. There are some things I really believe are "must" learns, and others would very much "like to learn," but at least I move forward every day.

All the time - I split up with a partner of 3 years mainly relating to me being way to busy working.

I never had time, seriously, I still don't get loads of time.
Glad I now have someone understanding in my life!

I remember, I was once stuck with installing BIND DNS.
It is a really odd job, if you are doing it for the first time.

I had to go through thousands of wiki pages, documentations and the stuff that I hate reading.

*if it is hardware/server related* Lol. Though I am not sure, what in general 'challenges' the OP is trying to ask?

Ion cube was installed, but not working
I remember rebuilding apache many times and it resisted..
Luckily it was sorted out, but the hassle I had was a nightmare

What has been one of the hardest tasks or issues or random problems that have come across your way and how did you solve it?

Biggest challenges?..

1. Server Migrations - Moving clients from one server to another can be dauting. :tired:

2. Data Recovery - Corrupt backups are NO fun at all!

3. Hardware Failure - A hosting provider's worst nightmare? :crash:

I actually get this one ALL of the time! :rolleyes2

Just like in games though, being accustomed to that sort of thing definitely helps. Time and experience will bring down your "time to fix" numbers drastically, as even if you don't know exactly how you're going to fix a new problem yet you'll at least know a good way to figure it out.

People often ask me how I know how to fix so many IT problems, and I always tell them "Because it's happened to me before", haha. If you just stay in the game long enough you build up enough past experience to be halfway there already.

Biggest hurdle I had was getting my degree in computer science and running a business at the same time.

Next largest hurdle was trying to find reliable providers over the years. Many of them would start great then over a year or two they would slowly get worse to awful and I would change providers to keep the uptime and provide the support and service level that I and my clients deserve.

I wanted to give Burst.net a try and see how they were but honestly the horror stories I have read about them leave me too gun shy to give that a try. Too afraid something horrible might happen.

It takes an incredible huge amount of time to build a business, but it can't go up in smoke over any problem that might arise.

DON'T you will regret it!!

a few years ago i decided to try and resell VPS and Burst had some good plans and also USA and EU plans (put you had to register as a reseller on both their USA and EU resell sites) this was no issue. A client asked for a VPS with Direct Admin. I know with DA they manually issue licences so can take upto 48 hours to get the lic depending when yoiu order it. So ordered a EU VPS which i got instantly without DA lic. 5 days later still no DA, so contacted burst, took another 3 days to get a reply which was sorry still waiting for DA to active lic ( so now 8 days and no lic) we will give you a free month. i decided to contact DA direct with the VPS IP to see the progress and was told that they did not have any record of this IP on their system either active or pending. so gave this info to burst and never ever got a reply from them. so i cancelled the VPS and my reseller accounts.

Ouch. I have read more than one story about non existent support and such like you are saying. They don't advertise it with their VPS offers they push, but you have to buy support as an addon for $49.95.
Imagine that selling a product then trying to sell the support as an extra.

That is why I have not done business with them as of yet. I don't want to be another one of those customers with a horror story that almost put them out of business because of Burst.net.

Keith Myers of K-Disk.net which he has since sold to someone else, but over a year ago when we were talking on the phone about VPS hosting he told me he had trouble with them as well. So given a credible source that I was actually on the phone with I took his advice.

I like adding features and offers to help clients, but only if I am almost completely sure that nothing could ever happen. Of course you will have odd issues ever so often. But seems more than just a once in a blue moon with them.

Then again you do hear those stories where the people are going gaga over them. I can't help but wonder if that is purely because they don't want the bad stories to scare away potential customers.

One of my toughest problem encountered so far was configuring LTSP with Distributed VPN access each with a designated Public access.. haven't slept for 2 days and even dreamed of solutions on how to make it work.. ;)
