Hi All,

What do you think about current status of hosting market? How is it going these days? Is it growing rapidly? How do you rate the market?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

The question seems a little too general. Rate the market on what metrics?

My general impressions are that there are way too many amateur hosts. Far too many of these hosts offer poor service and poorly managed servers.

Reseller accounts are partly to blame. People who think they can hang out a shingle and make a bundle with little work is another problem.

As to growth, recent surveys show that growth has leveled off over the last several years.

By rating, I mean rating the market on as many aspects as you know. What I'm trying to do is to collect as many opinions as possible regarding current state of hosting market for all types of service such as shared, reseller, VPS, cloud and dedicated hosting.

Indeed, Now its about 7 years I'm active in hosting business. I'm going to attend a MBA course in university. So I would like to perform a basic market research on my business. This will help me to create a marketing strategy for my business.

too many amateur hosts ( know as kiddie hosts) who get cheap everything for $2 reseller plans and call them selves webhosts where they lack knowledge or experience, so when they do get a client who asks then a question they cant answer they just close down and then pop up again under a new name
these days a VPS is the way to go as you can pick up a basic VPS for the same price as a shared plan.

The shared hosting market has long been saturated. Hosts are forced into ridiculous claims like unlimited this & that and some hosts now even stooping to crazy discounts of up to 80% off - come on, really? TBH, I find some of the methods used to get attention for shared hosting are embarrassing to read.
I agree with easyhostmedia in that VPS's are probably a better option, however, there are thousands of VPS providers too. IMO, if you look up celebrity websites and see what their hosting provider does - you'll be on the right track! You wont find them posting in any forum :)

VPS are selling like hot cakes. There is also a larger need for Cloud Hosting now, people wanted better solutions for distributing their content.

Even Cloud hosting has just become a marketing gimmick now. Most of the Cloud Hosting is not true cloud, but a single Data Center on Demand VPS with snapshots etc.

There is a huge market for every type of hosting, but it is like a marathon, the more the stamina the longer you can survive.

It is overwhelmingly congested with a lot of fly by night providers and cheapo hosts who are intentionally dumping services below cost in an effort to gain market share. Given the extremely competitive nature of this industry, that strategy never works. Sadly as those hosts fall short or completely fall by the wayside they pull the rest of the industry down in their wake.

After almost 20 years I can safely say that if you do not remain diverse enough, unique enough and or forward thinking enough you will not weather the storm.

I believe at some point there will be a move towards consolidation again with larger hosts buying up a lot of smaller hosts, or some combination of hosting companies consolidating / merging to form one larger more efficient provider.

I can say for certain that the state of the economy the last 1/2 dozen years has been of little to any positive help.

Just have to stay on top of the future trends and try to guess what the next big "buzz" word will be ofter "cloud"... Then capitalize on it until that one is beaten to death and priced under cost.

Never a dull moment in this business!

The competition has definitely increased, you have to really strive and offer best service to stay in the market! If the service being provided is good, it will definitely bring a bright future for the company. Web hosting business really depends on the quality of hosting and support service.

But it is all about getting clients through the door first, how are you achieving that yourself? You can claim you have the best services, fast support etc but unless they actually signup they won't experience that premium service. If they don't experience it with you then they might with the provider they signed up with.

This is the key. The hardest part is to get clients to TRY your services. We've done advertising campaigns, SEO optimization, etc. etc. and the best thing has been word of mouth advertising by existing clients recommending your services. If you can get that, you are 75% done with the sale to a new client.

Hard work that you have to love to do, I find that I can offer more products now and systems are more integrated. Getting clients still is the key to maintain a good company and that is how I see the Market.

The number of businesses getting online is increasing significantly by the day - from startup stores to companies realizing they need an online presence as the high street dies.

Though it would seem the number of fly by night hosts is also ever increasing :(

I strongly recommend everyone starting out by going for local businesses just to build the start of your business (get revenue, get testimonials and then really go for the online market).

As always, starting on a reseller is my recommendation and upgrade to a VPS+ only when needed.

The hosting market is such a bit market it is hard to keep up not just with technology but services offered to clients.

You have to dedicate a lot of time. :smash:

It looks like everyone and anyone can and want to provide hosting services. The competition has increased, however that gives everyone the stimulus to improve. And yes, VPS IS selling like hot cakes right now. :)

Hi,

The awareness of technology has increased, demands are increasing and with this expectations are increasing. In hosting, competition is increasing everyday. You can says, its becoming huge day by day with more providers jumping into the pool.

The web hosting industry has grown over time and people have become more informed about a good web hosting platform. There is an extremely tough competition in this industry and all the web hosting providers focus on providing great services. It is going to be difficult to choose a web hosting company among so many options.

The use of mobile phones has gone up the need for servers. Smart phones are in ever one hands so the net is now connected to many more persons, even persons over 65 are using the net so more traffic means more servers. Thanks hopes this helps

I don't think this applies to most sites. Most can simple do with a single shared account even when combining mobile traffic.
