Upgrade

According to vBulletin, all templates are considered changed. In addition, hacks on vB 3.0.1 won't work on 3.5 such as the point system we're using right now.

One of the reasons we are not upgrading. 3.0.1 satisfies us very well. Is 3.5 that different to make it worth the upgrade?

In a word, no.

I've never understood this upgrade frenzy.
If the script is secure leave it alone.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Well, there are many bug fixes in the new versions. A lot of improvements.

Which hacks are you using that are not available for 3.5? I'd be willing to help with migrating the style to 3.5 :)

bleh...upgrading.

As a host, we get requests to upgrade like it's a trend.

Alot of our resellers find it trendy to have the new version of this or that, without thinking of the consequences of upgrading.

Upgrading is nice if it's necessary, or beneficial, but upgrading just for the sake of bragging rights to a new version is not necessarily always a smart thing to do.

We always ask a lot of questions before taking a client's request seriously. If they can't answer them to the point where we find the upgrade necessary, then.....no upgrade, as welike to keep things stable and steady.

The questions would remain:
1. Is HD plagued by the bugs that 3.5 fixes?
2. Are the improvements necessary or just "Oooh look at that cool feature!" improvements?

Like I said, staying up to date is important, but only when it's necessary.

WireNine, Mark has pretty much summed up the reason for us to stay at 3.0 for a while. One of the biggest hacks is the reward system. Once we go on 3.5, there will be no more of it, so go figure how you reward members for participation (other than run constant contests).

If people are only coming here for points and prizes then that is a true shame. This community is 100x better than anything out there right now I don't think you should consider points or prizes that we have earned as something big. I for one would not care of my points system was reset to 0, it's the people and content of the site that draws me here.

Personally I would like to see 3.5 implemented as it DEFINETLY has good features and some nice ways to add hacks into the VBulletin easily. It is a drastic change from 3.0.7 from my personal experience and makes things a lot more easy to manage in regards to hacks. If we compare 3.5 to 3.0.x I can honestly say switching will be a lot more beneficial with the new features available. It comes with a nicer updated look for replying and the plugin system makes administrating the forums a lot more simple.

I think maybe you should reconsider this option because it can be much more beneficial by offering more and more things as more plugins are made. I for one would not care for my points being at 0 (even if I had the most) because it isn't about points here, it's about the content and the community. The only thing we have for the rewards system from what I can tell is the ability to post in the Advertisement section?

Just my :twocents:

Those are some nice yummies indeed :D.

But I would still rather have easier administration for you and your moderators via the plugin system along with newer features for the entire community and still get my points to 0. I think little sacrafices such as points could be made for the better of the community. I mean think about it, you find a neat little hack and all you do is plug it in. There are many more possibilities with an upgrade and the feature system such as that.

Senad, this weekend I will make a list of every hack we are going to lose vs gain, so we'll mack a decision then. Thank you again.

To be quite honest I don't see all the fuss over VBulletin 3.5.0. Sure it uses AJAX in a big and well documented way however the templating system and modification system for a currently existing forum will be altered considerabley.

If it's a new forum starting up, great, however unless you're willing to pay the price and spend the time sorting it all out, then it will be worth it. Otherwise, if it's not broken don't attempt to fix it :)

Can you make this list public? I mean if the community does a good search maybe we can all help find solutions to these problems. I'm willing to go a sleepless night after all

Of course. I will make this list public and we can all come to a decision together as a team.

Even if the forum doesn't upgrade to 3.5.0 shouldn't you update to atleast to the latest 3.0.xx Legacy?

There has been a few security hole bugs reported and resolved after the current version HD is running on (3.0.1).

Why not just use good ole' phpbb? ;) I've used them for about 4 or 5 years now. Never had a problem with them. They also have a very nice point/shop feature.

I also agree with whoever said that if its not broken, don't mess with it. I currently run phpbb2.0.17 and on the 31st .18 came out with some upgrades. Well, thats all fine and dandy but I have over 30 mods installed on our bored, some very big ones that will be hard to redo again. So, I'm just sticking with .17. Maybe when Olympus comes out...

Don't convert though, that'll be a pain for you guys.

You are joking right? With all of the wonderful PHPBB exploits you are telling them to switch the phpBB over a much more stable product such as VBulletin. There have been a lot of exploits found in both all of the forums out there (more for phpBB than anything else) and when we say if it isn't broken don't fix it, can we not also just state that we are pretty much opening ourselves and our servers to hackers?

This is a major update to the 2.0.x codebase and includes fixes for numerous bugs reported by users to our Bug Tracker, as well as updates to those issues identified by the recent security audit of the code and a couple of security issues reported to us. In addition we have backported a further feature from our "Olympus" codebase to change the way automatic logins are handled.

We would like to thank all of those who take part in the security audit of the code for their work.

As with all new releases we urge you to update as soon as possible. You can of course find this download available on our downloads page. As per usual four packages are available to simplify your update.
