Unlimited Hard drive space

Without a doubt.

Unless.....You can find a hard drive in a shop which has unlimited space ;)

There is no such thing, so they can't offer something that doesn't exist.

It can show a host that doesn't have any type of business plan because someone could store HUGE amounts of data/files etc. in their account but obviously the host wouldn't allow it.

No such thing as unlimited HDD :-(

I wanted to install one of these unlimited thingies on my server so I could compete with all the kiddie hosts :-)

Ahaha well sometimes I feel that way on the telephone.. so I'd say yes, it is possible :P

But yes, to add to all the other answers, no such thing as unlimited HD, however, it can be unmetered meaning they do not limit you to any limits other than what the harddrive will actually hold.. my opinion is this is bad as well, I'd rather know exactly what I am getting.

Also, hosts that say "unlimited" or "unmetered" often have hidden notes in their TOS saying you can use xMB of storage and then pay extra after that so be careful on the overage charges.

Some people say air is unlimited when I come in and say nothing is unlimited. Not even air. Anyone who went to school should know that.

I think 'Unlimited Disk Space' is a martketing ploy to draw you in. If could offer my clients "UNLIMITED DISK SPACE" very easily. And not have to worry about using up too much disk space. Just cap their bandwidth at 1GB per month. So I could say I have a plan for Unlimited Disk Space and Email with 1GB transfer per month! And people would think thats impossible.... but if you think about it He will never be able to upload more than 12GB of data to the server.

Im just playing the devils advocate on this one. I personally would not choose a host that offered this... but I am sure they have some sort of safe guard up like that.

Unlimited HDD Space is a buy ploy. Look at the TOS if it in fact defines unlimited and the conditions... then you can concider it. Otherwise run far away and very fast :)

You know what, that's a really good point, I never thought about it that way. They can only upload as much as their bandwidth allows...

Yeah, thats 12gb a year though, not total :)
I think a lot of people offer more than 1gb bandwidth though, just think if 5gb bandwidth was offered, thats 60gb/year

Many people that offer unlimited space, also offer HUGE amounts of bandwidth

:D Only one way to 'Unlimited Space' using a NAS setup - but their really expensive in real life for hosting, need your own datacenter really. Usually used for corp backup solutions or mainframe replacement technology.

Had this on another forum too - there is such a thing but it's a pricy option - called NAS (network accessible storage) basically a standalone disk array like mainframes would use for distributed fabric type storage.

You can actually just keep adding them, there is a theoretic limit but I don't think anyones ever taken it that far - love a chance to try though :D

So you could offer it on the back of pricy transfer costs and make a mint plus actually really offer unlimited space

Well, unlimited or not if a big company is advertising unlimited read the TOS over and over. If a small company is offering it then I would probally not go with them. The fact is, the larger company has more $$ to add clusters of HDD's that would make it seam unlimited. For example, a server with 1 TB is pretty much unlimited (not many users would ever come close to that) unless you are google, yahoo, IBM, etc). And that would be very expensive hardware so you are probally going to be on a high end server that can handle thousands of users.
