StartSSL have announced StartEncypt, an rival to LetsEncypt, but is it too late?

In response to LetsEncypt, long time Certificate Authority StartCom have announced they are starting StartEncypt as an alternative.

They will also be offering EV Certs to people/hosts who's companies have already been screened.

The EV offering looks good, but is it too late now DirectAdmin ad cPanel have started development to support LetsEncrypt.Org who already have a very large pool of backers.

If they give EV certs free, then i cant see how they could do this as the work required to get an EV SSL cert.
 
Starting development doesn't mean it's included. Who knows what kind of strings StartSSL can pull.

I do agree that EV certificates for 'free' like this are going to be bad. I don't see it happening.

EV also have to be run through mainstream CA and i cant see them allowing anyone to offer these free and i cant see StartSSL (startcom) giving away $200 SSLs
 
I believe you pay $199 dollars for the checks on your company to be completed.
Once your company has checked out, you get free EV domains if the domain is registered to the company, if that makes sense.
So EVs are not totally free, but you are not paying for the check every time.
This makes your first certificate more expensive than say a GoDaddy EV cert, but if you have lots of sites you want SSL on, then I can see the $199 would be easy to swallow.

I sell and use EV certs and these are expensive due to the checks and the price remains high for every time to renew.

sometimes Comodo will give free EV upgrades with certain SSL certs, but you have to go through all the same checks.
also with an EV your site this is assigned too must not have any images/links that will only run on http
 
They would have to do something different/better than Let's Encrypt to get market share IMHO. The EV cert thing sounds nice but realistically it's going to be more difficult than Let's Encrypt.

Beyond that - the higher initial cost will probably turn people off.
 
I wouldn't say it was too late. One could argue it is too late to start a web hosting provider as there are thousands of them yet they pop up daily and some do succeed to a certain level.

They have lost a lot of time though. LetsEncrypt has really gone places with the sponsors, integrations and getting more mainstream.

Will be interesting for sure :).
