Software Defined, Scale-out Storage?

Hi folks,

Have you tried to use (or already implemented) any Software Defined Storage (SDS) solutions?

We have installed and currently adding service VMware's vSAN which is a great storage solution for any kind of data center and IT Hosting architectures. As you can imagine, it is costly for the clients, therefore we are building an alternative SDS array, a lower cost alternative to those who cannot afford paying for a premium Cloud storage.

We are about to start testing the FreeBSD Highly Available Storage (HAST)? Is there anyone who tried this one or any other software defined storage with similar functionality?

Do you count CEPH as SDS? We have some experience using ceph as KVM backend and we really love it. Though I understand your route to vmware vSAN as you get pretty decent support by vmware.
