After months of development and weeks of testing, this brand new service is finally here for web hosting industry's benefit. Web Hosting Industry Index monitors fluctuation of prices in proportion to web space and bandwidth. These indexes are dynamic and real-time, and are based on verified packages submitted by web hosting companies in different markets.

Similar to financial stock market, the system captures the daily "closing" average (web space, bandwidth and price) at 9:00 PM EST 7 days a week.

Please take this as contructive criticism, and not just criticsm.

I feel that Web Hosting Industry Index actually does a dis-service to it's users/browsers, by offering pricing based only on disk space and transfer traffic assignments.

I do like the idea in general, but I feel that putting the price based solely on disk and traffic is very misleading to a user that doesn't know better than to assume he should only shop on disk/traffic.

Many companies base their pricing on the actual packages they are selling, with disk/traffic being a secondary item in their pricing model.

It's almost as if the site is saying: this is what you should pay for xxx MB disk space, and xxxxMB transfer traffic.

If I take Linux reseller as an example:
As a visitor to Web Hosting Industry Index, I am to assume that a normal price (as of right now) for 75GB of transfer traffic, and 6GB of disk space is $33 (All I can say to that is: Ouch!)

I think that should you add more feature-based columns (providing each contributing provider was honest) then you would be able to give a clearer look at what a user would/should expect to pay, based on their requirements.

It could be much lower, and I suspect the average will actually be much lower as time goes on and more hosts add their info. :)

I believe Art is simply focusing on the readily available hard numbers. Projected, or underlying, or even actual service levels, cannot be assigned numbers easily (or at all). Also, trouble is that not eveything is countable.

I think that should you add more feature-based columns (providing each contributing provider was honest) then you would be able to give a clearer look at what a user would/should expect to pay, based on their requirements.

Maybe some examples of what you have in mind would help.
 
Simon, sorry it took a while to get back to you. Thank you for your feedback, and I do understand the effect the service gives at this stage. However, as Dan noticed, and as I hold the discussion about the same issue on another forum, its all about the numbers. Right now we have around 25 companies and 150 packages submitted (note: that includes ALL categories and packages). That's not much and discrepancies are meant to happen. However, once we get to 250 companies and 1500 packages, the numbers displayed will be more accurate.

Not sure if it addresses your concern. As for new features, when we get to that level, I will certainly make it possible for all users to see the number of companies and the number of packages submitted per hosting type for better understanding how accurate a certain number is.

I'm starting a project myself very similar to that but on a much larger and very unique scale. (No I'm not advertising), so I can understand why you've put that up. Looking good so far. I'll submit my site right now. :)
