Maxmind to discontinue phone verification

Hey,

So I was browsing the Maxmind website today and found this on the phone verification page:

MaxMind may discontinue the Telephone Verification service at a future date to be determined. We will post further details here once we have set the discontinuation date.

No set date to discontinue it but it looks to be happening in the future.

It is unfortunate to see this feature go as I could really see good value in it.

Anyone know of any alternatives?

I wonder if they will refund people who have phone credits. I have $5 worth of phone credit I'd like back if they discontinue the service.

Well, I doubt I will. I bought these credits like 3 years ago lol But still, it would be nice to have an extra $5 :)

I don't plan on contacting them. I've been dealing with tech support the last week n half about stuff and I don't feel like contacting another one ;(

But will they discontinue the Fraud Protection Service?
Boy if it isn't for phone verification one would be dealing with quite a lot of chargebacks imo.

The main fraud protection will continue (getting risk score and automatically blocking orders based on the scores etc). Only the phone verification part is being discontinued.

The thing is the word i have highlighted

its like me saying I may jump off the empire state building one day

Well, the next sentence sounds more definitive:
We will post further details here once we have set the discontinuation date.

Lets not debate it, there is a damn good chance it will be discontinued in future if they've put the message up on their website. Use this thread as a chance to find alternatives should the day arrive.

it is also sneeky of them just posting that on their website rather than email all their clients using the service as when you are using maxmind with WHMCS it is very rare that you need to go onto the maxmind site unless you have to top up for the telephone service.

I think it is more discouraging new signups so no new clients commit to it when it may be discontinued in the near future. I would expect them to inform existing clients once they have a set plan / set date to stop this service.

UPDATE:

Just got this from Maxmind

Subject: Discontinuation of MaxMind Telephone Verification Service

Dear MaxMind Customer,

MaxMind is discontinuing its Telephone Verification Service. The last day to purchase this service is September 30, 2014. Access to Telephone Verification Service ends on December 31, 2014.

Please note that you can continue to benefit from a service comparable to our Telephone Verification Service using the vendors listed below. Both provide an SMS-based option in addition to voice-based verification:

TeleSign

a.. TeleSign clients must spend at least $100 per month.
b.. See their information request form
Trumpia

a.. Trumpia provides voice-based verification only at numbers in the US, Canada, Guam, and Puerto Rico; SMS is supported in most countries.
b.. Trumpia pricing is available
Note that we continue to offer a Telephone Number Identification service, which allows you to look up type of phone associated with a number (e.g., mobile, VoIP, land line).

We thank you for your continued business. Please contact support@maxmind.com with any questions.

Regards,

MaxMind

Found the date from another forum. Really do wonder why they're stopping this service, in my mind, it really adds value to what they offer.

Yes it puzzles me as we are all being told about increasing security etc. when online and yet one of the most commonly used anti fraud service providers is removing a security measure.

That is indeed a strange move. May be there are some financials involved behind offering the service and maintaining. We may never know the internals :(

I know a while back they stopped offering Minfraud free to WHMCS users, but like me i have this free, but have to pay for the telephone service, if this has gone up in costs to run and maintain then you would just up the cost to use the service and not remove it, but like you say 'We may never know the internals '

Well here is an alternative that we are going to try out.

onverify.com - Demo worked fine. All verification types. Can be set from admin: Phone, SMS, Auto Selection, User Select

http://blog.onverify.com/2012/02/22/fraud-protection-module-for-whmcs-2/

Live demo is available at http://whmcs.onverify.com/

Customer can use Auto Selection to receive a SMS or a phone call.

Thanks for posting!

Looks like a promising replacement and you only pay for answered calls, unlike MaxMind which charged you for placing the call regardless if someone answered or not.
