Hello. Liquidweb now offers a VPS for 60$/month. 20GB storage and 200 GB bandwidth. I am tempted but I am afraid they are overselling. What do you think?
Thank you.

That pricing does not seem to indicate overselling. It is also a bit more difficult to oversell on a VPS because a certain amount of guaranteed resources is provided. I am not too familiar with VPS software, but I am aware that many do not support overselling of resources. Have you looked into any other companies?

That may not be overselling, what you should do is look for reviews on them and see what people think. If they have a good service that everyone loves then it shouldn't matter wheather its oversold or not.

Mike is right about the overselling. Some companies are able to handle small amounts of overselling - but it does not look like it is overselling. Search for reviews/ask for reviews. Google is a good place to start, use the GoogleGroups feature. Check out a few other forums for more reviews, and as always, do month to month. Stay away from yearly contracts - no host should lock you in for a simple small package as such.

AFAIK Liquidweb has a good reputation, but I've never used them.

One thing to realise is that a VPS guarantees a minimum level of server resources (like CPU and memory), but the resources are ultimately limited. Like with a dedicated pushing 2000GB, depending on your type of site(s), there's no guarantee you'll be able to push 200GB from that VPS.

Liquidweb owns the datacenter, so I doubt they would skimp on bandwidth.

If you decide to go with them, come back and write a few for us! We'd sure appreciate such feedback! :agree:

they are a good company, with good service and uptime, but are extremely pricey. There are many companies i could get a dedicated 2000+ or celeron 2.0ghz with 1000gb of transfer for the same price. But, you pay for the service and support, which is priceless.

No, they are not overselling at all - in fact, anyone offering a VPS can't really oversell all that much as you have to maintain a minimum guarantee of CPU and RAM. Diskspace, well, thats a different story. However, they truely are there 24x7 (I've called them at 4 in the morning before) and they're always ready to help. One thing that I'm not so happy about (and I guess I'm just used to instantaneous replies) is that it takes a few hours to get a response back from their team initially - but once you do get the initial reply, it's all smooth sailing from there. Of course, if it's an urgent issue - you can always call them up :). Some techs even list their IM handles in their e-mail sigs so you can get a hold of them even without opening up a ticket or calling them up :)
