Just what's wrong w/ the hosting industry today

Is WHT banned on that forum?

It just goes to show that kids do not belong in business.
The logic and financial calculations are so far off that the proposed business in link one would fail miserably.

What is most unfortunate is that these kiddie hosts take a lot of people down with them when they get bored of their business or can't make the next server payment because they spent all their money on a Sony Play Station.

Oh my God.. $15 as an investment to start hosting business, and he doesn't have even that... What a shame to the industry.

That was exactly my reaction! This is beyond a joke. And like Blue stated, it's not funny at all for the poor saps who sign up with one of these "hosts". It seems to me there aren't ANY *adult* hosts on that forum. Otherwise, we would've seen some good responses setting these people straight. :)

What's wrong with the first thread?? The calculations aren't perfect, but it's interesting.

The second thread is just funny.

Think that's bad...

If I had a quarter for everytime someone asked for a 'free' reseller account, I could probably buy that $15 guy his hosting for him :)

<shakes head>

I've been looking over the rest of the forum, and I think I know why they don't believe you. I don't think any of them really know what it's like supporting a largeish customer base. See this poll: http://www.webhostingforum.com/showthread.php?threadid=156

Now to each their own, but their experience with 5 customers doesn't realistically reflect large-scale support (500+) - it just doesn't scale.

Now the fact that they have the acronym wht censored - that's odd.

How can you guys even read the garbage on that forum?
I read 6 random threads and the people who post there make the kiddie hosts at WHT sound mature.
Next time someone bitches about WHT being over moderated or if someone bitches about HD being over moderated, just send them there to see what a low level the forum will go to without decent MOD input.

OK, someone pulled a nerve there... hehehehe, that forum can be a great excercise to train your nerve system to withstand the flow of absolute insane information. :D

"You know what I do, Paul, when I'm mad? I hit a pillow. Just hit a pillow. See how you feel..." Analyze This

Best,

I guess you're right David. Kind of like slowing down to see an accident or watching a Keanu Reeves movie. You watch just to see how bad it can get.

haha no doubt. I guess its the same reason I've read stuff there. It's just fascinating to see just how misinformed some of these people are and they are giving advice to others on how to run a business. It's madness. Yes I do agree without a mod who's experienced or some experienced hosts in the community to give input, these people are completely lost. It is precisely the reason why most threads are garbage and no one is setting them straight.

Probably they just think that jumping into webhosting industry is just easy (probably because there are so many cheap reseller account from an overselling hosting around). Well, they are wrong in my opinion. I mean, the most expensive and the most important part is not the hosting but the service we gave to customer.

It's funny. back in the old days $25/mo was a good deal for web hosting. Mind you it did cost at least $1000/mo for someone to own a dedicated server.

Today it's $100/mo and the average 'good deal' for webhosting is $2.50. It maybe 10x cheaper for kiddies to start up their 'business' but it takes 10x the number of customers to retain the same profits as the old days. Don't even get me started on control panels ;)

I wonder what the average life-span of a web host is now.

I'd say 3 months.

Id say this is only true if...

Any host trying to make it in this business with those rates is doomed to fail.

Maybe customers need to re-evaluate what a good deal for hosting is.

I guess it depends on how important your site is to you. But Id rather pay more knowing the host will be around, rather then scrambling for a new host every few months.

My $0.02

Well we all have our own learning curves I suppose even I have finally settled into a rate at which I'm comfortable at charging for my services and that took over a year I've gone from high priced to dirt cheap and now landed in the middle.

I would say kids do not belong in ANY industry. Well, maybe except for entertainment (music, radio, tv, etc.).

Kids have no economics knowledge, nor how things work or should work, a sense of what's fair and what's not, they have no idea how to estimate and value stuff... Its a disaster.
