How to find out webhost for a given website?

I am looking for a webhost and thought it might be a good idea to have a look at websites I like (for example with fast page updates), and then determine the webhost which supports this website. Is there a way to find out, given the website, which webhost is associated with that website? Being new, I tried WHOIS and alike, giving all kinds of information about Registrars, Domain Name Servers, etc. But as far as I can see, there is no information which leads to the webhost's home page. Any ideas?

Nameservers generally point to who is hosting the site. IE: If someone is hosting from (random ad from top) xeocomm.com - their nameservers would more than likely be ns1.xeocomm.com and ns2.xeocomm.com.

Not necessarily, and not always, but most of the time. Just punch in the xeocomm.com and you get their site. HOpe this helps some.

A very tired,

Possibly, an easy method, is just write to the contact info listed on the sites you like, and ask them.

Many would be happy to tell you.

Most honest webhosts would be pleased tell you such a thing as a reliable supplier may actually add another golden star next to their name.

What I have done is .... do the WHOIS and get the IP numbers ... or as Exon suggests ... the name servers might do. But if the website owner is like me ... I like using my own name servers. In that case ... get the IP number and do a WHOIS on the IP number. Most times the IP is assigned as part of a block to a web host ... and you have the name of the hosting company :)

Based on my experience, more often than not, the IP is assigned to the datacenter, not the actual host.

Thats usually correct, although sometimes, the datacenter will agree (if asked) to update the listing with your contact information

Yes, that is a great way to do it. Survey a few for more even spread results.

There's more than a webhost than fast load times. There's also support/features and prices that you should take into consideration. There are many websites out there run by horrible hosts. Usually people really satisfied with their host might put a link to their website on their page.
