How to Choose Server Management Service?

Hi,

I have a dedicated server with CentOS and cPanel. I want to choose a reliable server management service, at a reasonable price. Now I have several problems:

1. Although there are so many server management service companies, there are not so many reviews or ratings on them. For hosting providers, I can easily get reliable reviews from http://www.whoishostingthis.com/ or http://webhostinggeeks.com/ , but for server management service, even I try to google with keyword “server management service provider review” or “server management service provider rating”, I cannot get any comprehensive review listing at all.
2. What I need is top 3 or top 10 players in this industry. So that I can choose from them based on my requirements. But now I feel I am totally in dark.
3. You will get what you paid. So normally I will think a too cheap service will not provide good service. However, platinumservermanagement charges only 29 USD per month, but they still have a good reputation, which makes me totally confused.
4. I try to sign up an account on platinumservermanagement. And they provide the login details to me. I notice that the password is not strong enough(only 12 characters without any special characters), and they do not provide an easy way to update the password. It seems that their system is out-dated and the security is low. If they manage my server, surely the security of my server will also be lowered as well. Does anyone have similar worries?
5. I also check ServerAdminz, BobCares, etc. It seems that most of the companies have outsourced their services to India. Will that also lower the quality and security of the service?

Thanks for any answers

BobCares has some really happy customers.
There will be cheaper India options, as well as cheaper USA options - the location doesn't necessarily mean a bad service.
BobCares is certainly on the more expensive side.

Example:
Plastinumservermanagement - USA based. $29 per month.
BobCares - $75 per month.

Pricing usually starts at $150 per month for proactive management in the USA/UK.
India varies.
There is a provider based in the Ukraine that charges $140/mo.

I wouldn't rule out India just because it's India - there are good providers and bad providers - no matter which part of the world.

Platinum Server Management has a great reputation within in the industry. I would not confuse their low price with an inability to provide reliable service.

+1 for Platinum (aka PSM).
They are very reputable, based in USA and their low price might think you get bad or low speed services, however we have a few servers prepared and managed by them and we couldn't be more happy.

Here's the deal (something you aren't going to want to hear, but it's the truth)

Services like PSM are garbage. ANYONE offering server management < $100/server / month is just that , garbage. They're not really 'managing' anything. Anyone offering 'unlimited' time is garbage. They're not really doing anything for you at all.

A proper server manager will place limits on things, and respect their time, as well as their employees. Of course, like I said, you're not going to like that, but once you've dealt with these cheap outsourced companies for long enough, you'll never go back to sub $100/month services again

Someone mentioned "ANYONE offering server management < $100/server is garbage".
[We] also offer [services] for under $100 and I thought I should explain how we are able to [do that].

We have automated most of the common tasks we perform on the server. So if a customer asks us to do something on the server, we may already have the script for it and we just need to log in and run the script. This saves a lot of time and admin hours.

We have used PSM. While I do not care for the amount of time it takes them to work on items. They do a decent job at the monthly and weekly maintenance. I just do not use them for critical time sensitive things. We handle that.

If you are choosing the server management service then you should go for professional server provider that can provide you best services and also good support. As support is very much necessary and important from the future point of view.

Latest Technologies should be used and the server provider should be upgraded.

Be careful of long-term contracts. While you have a dedicated server now, the future is in cloud/VPS, so whatever you go for, I'd make sure that you're free to leave at any time.

We have used bob cares

They were very slow but the responce was of a very high quality. They did still within the 4 hour SLA but we found that still to be too slow.

Platinum server management are very good at what they do but again were very slow with responses. Sometimes a ticket would still be there 24 hours later, but don't get me wrong some times the response on the tickets were very quick

In the end we had to bring our support in house and its been working much better since

There are good sever management agencies out there. Since it's a service, and you do not want to risk it with the sub standard ones. I would suggest you to go ahead and use a trial pack or maybe, purchase the starter pre-paid per ticket support pack from the best players.
