How can you make off one server

Wouldn't this partially depend on factors that we can't always adequately predict or control?

* how much of their space / bandwidth resources the customers actually use
* how frequently the customers change their hosting plan (upgrade or downgrade)
* how resource-intensive a customer's account is

For example:
A client has an account with limits of 375 MB disk space, 20 GB bandwidth / month. They originally signed up two "steps" down, and are looking to upgrade again soon. Up until about January of this year, they used only a few GB of bandwidth every month, even with an active forum. However, they have upgraded twice...and always because they needed extra space. They recently started using their full bandwidth allowance (even minor overages). If they had been on a full server, their sudden activity change might have affected the other clients on the box. Other clients may have gotten peeved and left. Even if they had stayed, asking clients to move their sites doesn't reflect too well on the host, IMHO, unless the circumstances are truly outstanding (moving to a new datacenter, major damage or server failure, new server upgrades all across the board, what have you.)

...side question: if anyone has any tips and tricks for planning your server allocation(s), I personally would love to hear them :D

Depends on how good you can manage your resources. If you install GZIP you can actually get more bandwidth out of it, seeing it compresses some files. Id say no more then around $400

On average you can make between $800 to $2,000 per server. It can be less - it can be more. Depends on your business model.

It really depends on your business plan. How much do you charge for a plan. You only have so much disk space and bandwidth on the server. Assuming you don't oversell, then just divide the total available by the size of your plans. Multiple by the cost of a plan and you have to total income. Now subtract the server cost, maintenance costs, software costs, etc. That is a rough estimate of profit for that server. If you oversell, just calculate the above using the amount you oversell as the value. So if you have a 100GB /home partition on your server and you oversell by 100%, do the above based on a virtual size of 200GB.

The above is a very rough guess of how much you can make on a server. There are a lot of other factors that play in.

That would also add to the load

Lets say that you have a 40GB harddrive on that server with a 1.7 celeron and 256 ram
I don't think you can make much out of such a low powered server as it wouldn't be able to handle much. You have to be very careful about the load. With such a configuration you risk to oversell the resources (cpu and ram) before getting to oversell the bandwidth.

Ok, how many companies do you think oversell
Oversell what? IMO all hosts oversell their resources. Some more, some less. Also many hosts oversell bandwidth. The thing is if they know how to oversell or not, as it can be done succesfully (in a limited manner), but it can be overdone as well.

Each of my servers are 2 terabytes in size, yearly after bandwidth costs for me, when they are filled with resellers, each Server is worth around $10,000

You must have *VERY* powerful servers to be dealing with 2 terabytes of data and the amount of transfer they must be doing.
Are they not really overloaded?
2 TB is just mad for one server.
What is your load normally around?
What are your server specs?

No I don't :)
Read your network status.
What are your loads like?
Would you want to give us an idea of how much bandwidth you use per month ;)

Some of your links on the menu bar don't go anywhere, the main page just reloads, is this because you don't offer those services yet?

Grumble, no, we are paying to have our website redesigned, and for some reason, the "artist" has decided to take his time uploading graphics and just basically screwing around.
This is now the second day alot of links have been down.
You can email me personally and I can answer anything you need

What is your load like? How much of that data is actually transferred every month?
They must be storing a lot that isn't actually used.
How much space is your largest site hosted using?
Would they not be better off having their own dedicated?

Hello.

I think it depends on your plans and type of customers. If you are offering plans which provide 50mb space and 1gb bandwidth, most likely you'll be able fit at least 400 accounts on a server (20 gb space used up).

Most clients don't use up their entire quota...while others might upgrade. There really isn't a general answer to this topic.

Regards,
Zeeshan

P.S. Just my 2 cents.
