Help me: Slicehost or Lylix for running Asterisk?

I need a VPS service and considering going with Slicehost vs. Lylix. I need to host and run Asterisk on a linux server. Now some people mentioned Lylix is the best for this since Lylix specialize on Asterisk. However I find their customer service(pre sales) too slow and their website slow and sometimes unavailable during the past 1 week of monitoring. Lylix also claims that their server is tuned for Asterisk. I am not sure what this means. Slicehost on the other hand have excellent customer service(pre sales) and they mentioned I can run any software without problems. Now I am just beginning with Asterisk and would request you guy's feedbacks to help me make a decision. What do you guys suggest.

Try the host that seems to provide the best support, uptime and is familiar with Astericks. Being 'tuned' for Asterisk simply means that the set up will be easier, however, beyond that there may be no difference between the two hosts.

Additionally, does either provide 30 day money back guarantee?

Do yourself a favor and start out paying month to month until you're comfortable with the host

I wonder how some service can be tuned for Asterix. It probably means they have Asterix templates available that are easy to provision or something.

You've got it. Most Linux based VPS's or dedicated boxes with Linux are tuned for web hosting. It simply means that the options used and packages loaded during loading of the OS are geared toward web hosting or in this case Asterix.

I was aslo looking for a VPS and wanted to order it at Slicehost, but I am confused about Lighttpd which they offer, is it the same as Apache?

Hi there,

I've used both lylix and slicehost to run asterisk and both worked pretty well.

Slicehost is a great hosting company, with good support and nice VPSs and I still host some stuff there.

I moved Asterisk from Slicehost to Lylix for a couple of reasons -

1 - They've got VM servers in New York so now I get *really* good pings to callcentric who I'm using for SIP. Important for VOIP.

2 - Lylix build the zaptel dummy drivers into the kernel (which is one of the things they mean by 'tuned for ...'). This lets you use the music-on-hold and conferencing features of asterisk which is something you can't do on most VPSs - including Slicehost

If you're feeling brave you can install Asterisk and FreePBX yourself on one of their (cheap!) VPS servers rather than paying the extra for a pre-build VPS.

Regards - Matt

Lighttpd is said to be good for static content sites, as it can handle fewer connections than Apache.
I suggest checking asmallorange.com and globaltap.com vps deals, they both offer Apache.

You could really run Asterix on any server, be it VPS or Dedicated. I would have to recommend slicehost for the mere fact that you got a Xen solution. I'm not sure about Lylix, as I have never tried them.

Give slicehost a try, unless you find another Xen provider with a different type of offering.
