Google to rank on HTTPS

It appears Google is going to start taking into account website encryption (HTTPS) when ranking websites. It will start very low (1% of global queries) to give time for webmasters to switch but over time, it will play a more significant role in search ranking.

Any time Google makes a public change like this I have to wonder about their true motivations. "Google" and "benevolence" are not synonymous - there's got to be an angle.

After thinking about it for all of 10 seconds, the only thing I can come up with is that somehow HTTP has to be creating problems for them with product quality. Is it people who are trying to scam their search engine/PPC that they can't verify somehow? It's got to be something like that.

Of course they'll duck behind, "we're trying to make the Internet a safer place" because it's just good PR but I don't think they'd do ANYTHING unless they figured they could make a buck at it (or stop bleed)

It HAS already started. Sometimes I never help but wonder why some people are so easily influenced. All it takes is a hazy statement and already people are running towards a fictional prize. All that about the reveal of a factor, which will have around 1/200 impact on the search algorithm.

In other news, people seem to forget that Google will soon enter the domain registration game. And how dramatically convenient - it will most probably include an SSL encryption service. Coincidence? Not in the Google world :rolleyes2

Who knows what their real motivation is but you know they will make money from it.

I don't think that's bad. It will push away low quality web sites, scam sites who have ranked somehow higher than original product websites

I don't think it'll make much difference in terms of that after all, you can get some very cheap certificates these days or even free with some providers such as ourselves.
