Free Servers?

Hivelocity

New member
I’m wondering how many companies out there put servers online for customers without getting payment? I have had a lot of people asking for 15 day terms even for new servers? So anyone putting servers online for free?

Thank you,

I haven't seen any hosts that offer dedicated servers for a 30 day money back guarantee. I believe that licensing fees and the dollar amount are probably the most likely reasons. Many host go through much effort to validate the customer and ensure that they (the customer) know everything up front.

15 days...

We have 1 hour trials on our VPS servers, but not on dedicateds.

Due to the expense, I don't think many people want the hassle. I could see a lot of abuse happening over the course of 15 days.

I wouldn't offer a free trial for a dedicated server because of the expenses but I do talk with the client to be sure they understand everything. I recently added phone support for dedicated server clients because they tend to buy if they actually hear who I am

I agree, It takes time to bring a dedicated online just for one customer to try out. You then have to factor in the cost of a control panel licence for that say 15 day trial. Its just not financially viable.

Dedi's on trial

I just think you are asking for a nightmare if you offer dedicateds on trial. I can see instances of hackers/abusers coming in and spamming or attacking others.

Time vs. Money

No. I cant see any reason why someone in their right mind (no offense if you do, just my thoughts here) would end up doing this. I see many of the guarantees, but I have yet to see a trial.

And on the note that abuse would happen a great deal within 1/2 a month, I could see it being done in as little as 24hrs. :D

While the idea is certainly good, I'm don't see how it could be done safely. 2nd month free options are a safer and better way to give away free time on a dedicated server.

I doubt this to be a good idea as well.

How could this be any different than providing speed test links for your network?

Then count the work needed (OS reinstalls, control panel installs, etc...) plus the cost of the server/bandwidth itself with no guarantee of having a reliable client afterwards. Maybe after effective screening is done, but even then...Like dimension4 said, 2nd month free would probably be a better bet.

Trials are definitely hard to do. I guess it really depends on your business model and if you can afford the time to track down all those clients.

If you have your own DC and a big company request a trial for a dedicated server then i think it is ok since there is a potential customer that may want more than 1 server.

To offer this to a small company or a home user is a bad idea, maybe a 3 day trial maximum.

I think it depends on what the customer is looking for. I would set up a trial for someone looking to spend a lot of money with me, and setup a basic example of the service.

I offer free trials for all hosting packages and shoutcast, but dedicated servers I am more hesitant.
