While many hosts prefer the ease of hosting on Windows servers, many also like the stability and security of Linux and FreeBSD servers. What server operating system do you use? Why do you prefer that OS?

I would have to say linux..... for webhosting, linux... maybe freebsd, but i would say linux...

never windows unless you are a totally seperate company or have a lot of secuirty, know what you are doing, and are all on your own.

Linux is an open source and free too. It has been considered as the best OS for Web servers. It is the most reliable, stable and efficient system used for the Web and mail servers. All web servers are configured to support HTML files and JavaScript. There are many other type of Server Side scripting and interfaces, including PHP, ASP and ASP.net.

I have only ever offered Linux, but would never do Windows.

Linux is generally perferred by customers as well.

The is no such a thing as favourite when you have to meet project requirements:eek: , but if I can choose i go for Linux!!;)

We always recommend Linux, for both web hosting and gameservers. We choose CentOS to be the operating system on all of our servers because of the low usage of CPU, and high stability

I just prefer linux hosts since you get whole lots free things attched with it while in Windows you have to pay fo reverything

I am using Windows. I have used this eversince. But with the increasing technology, I think it?s time for me to try linux.

I am using Windows for a couple of years. But now I'm on my way of learning Linux. I think it is more advantageous than windows though at present it seems so complicated for me. One thing more you can have this OS free.

Schatzi the best thing of learning this OS, is you have it installed on your PC. It's really easy for you to explore and understand it's configs.

Absolutely.

Go for *nix unless you have need for asp etc.

There are many other type of Server Side scripting and interfaces, including PHP, ASP and ASP.net.

That solutions sucks. If you need ASP, just go for windows or be left with 50% of what you need.

I use Linux for most servers; the only real reason that you'll need Windows is if you want to offer ASP...

Linux is generally OK for standard hositngs - it's only businesses that the server OS will actually matter too.
