ebay hosts

Hi,

I been looking at the hosting on ebay and noticed how cheap it is.

I mean you can get like unlimited bandwidth and stuff for 8$ a year.

Can people please let me know why its so cheap, and where the catch is?

Thanks

This is cheap because it is some sort of scam. The catch is that you will not receive unlimited bandwidth because it is not an unlimited resource. Most likely, you will be wasting your money on these cheap hosts.

The catch is that your host will go out of business in about a week.

1. There is no such thing as unlimited bandwidth
2. $8/year can barely even get you a domain name
3. Just use your common sense and search for a quality host.

You are asking for nothing but trouble with an "Ebay" host

The Truth About Unlimited Bandwidth:
Web Hosting is a commodity. The main elements of any web hosting plan are disk space and bandwidth. Disk space is the space you have allotted on the web server to store your website. Bandwidth is an amount you have available to transfer web pages from the web server to the browsers of visitors to your site. Web pages and graphics consume bandwidth or capacity on the web. Bandwidth and disk space cost money.

The network lines that carry data around the web (optic fiber, cable, copper wire etc) have a finite capacity. There is a limit to the amount of data that can be transferred at any point in time. Likewise, the hard drive of a web server has a limited amount of space determined by the physical size of the hard drive.

Many hosting companies claim to offer "unlimited" plans (both disk space and bandwidth), but be aware that there are physical limitations to both disk space and bandwidth. Before you buy an "unlimited" plan, know what you're getting into.

The Attraction to Unlimited
When consumers decide they want to place a website on the internet, they are often unaware of the fact that there are limitations. Unlimited is attractive because it requires no further thought. If it's unlimited then I never need to worry about running out right? Although this is understandable, there are risks with purchasing unlimited plans.

The Unlimited Myth
Many web hosting companies offer "unlimited" as a plan feature. It is impossible for any provider to actually provide an unlimited amount of bandwidth or disk space. It's just not possible. It is like buying a fridge with unlimited amounts of space. It might be big, but there is a physical maximum.

So Why Do Unlimited Plans Exist?
Most websites only consume a very small amount of bandwidth and disk space. Web hosting companies that provide unlimited anything as a plan feature are banking on the fact that you won't use very much. Unlimited is a marketing trick to get your business. The web hosting market is very competitive. Although selling plans that pretend to be unlimited can seem dishonest, it does not mean that the hosting company will not provide good service. Check in the hosting company's Terms of Service: there will probably be a note about what "unlimited" really means.

When Are Unlimited Plans Ok?
They're not. Even if you have a small website and know that it will not consume too much space/bandwidth the other accounts on the same server might hog up all the available resources and as a result your website could be unreliable, slow, and in some cases you might lose all your data.

So What Is The Best Thing To Do?
The best course of action is to plan ahead. Calculate what type of bandwidth and disk space you will need for your site then multiply it by 2 just to allow for expansion. Remember, you can always buy more bandwidth or disk space if you need - often for only a few dollars a month extra. Look for plans that meet those requirements.

Forget where it's from, but it was an E-mail I got from someone a long time ago and have kept. Pretty good article.

DizzyEgg, to relate back to a thread that was closed a good few months ago, on ebay hosting, more often than not, hosts found on ebay are either just there to get a once-off payment from you and then run away, or alternatively, they are kiddie hosts with nothing better to do.
I did a search for that thread (which might have been a good idea for you before you started this thread) and found that post:

As far as Unlimited Bandwidth goes, I wouldn't vouch that your site will be up for more than 6 hours at a time and the business will go bust within 6weeks.

Thanks you for your info. I’m sorry, I should of done a search for ebay hosts before I posted this thread (was at work and the boss was close, sorry). I’m very grateful for your information. I find forums, like this, the best way to get feedback. I was looking for a low cost (paid annually) web host. I really have no idea how much bandwidth I would use. The site would be used for forums and to host a few images, I don’t think I would need more than 150-200mb space but I’m lost with bandwidth.

The site will host forums, which I’m hoping will be quite popular. Could someone please give me an idea of how much bandwidth these forums use on a monthly basis?

Also (I’m a pest, I know) the forums will discuss ‘illegal files’ and have links (ftp links, not hosted on the web server) to these files. I’m not sure many hosting companies will like this, but I don’t want to pay a crazy amount for an off-shore server.

Thanks for your time people.

I wish you luck in finding a provider who will do that for you, most steer clear of that kind of publicity, and as far as how much transfer you will use per month it all depends on the activity of your forums. Signatures (will they have graphics?), avatars, etc... the amount of users/guests that visit will also play a role in your monthly transfer needs. Most hosts should be willing to help you track your transfer/month and adjust accordingly. Start with a basic package, pay per month - not year, and go from there. If you pay annually it'll be harder and more confusing to upgrade your package for all envolved, as well if your choice of host wants to up and leave, well, you're out 9, 10, 11, or 12 months worth of hosting and won't be getting a refund anytime soon.

I'd guess at starting with a basic package, most basic packages will meet your 150-200mb of space requirement and give you a gig or more of transfer/month.

Thanks, for the reply. Right so I got one thing sorted, I have decided to pay monthly, I read your reply and thought about it, I don’t want to waste any money, I haven’t got enough to do that. I am paying $170 for my domain, so you can see why I want to get the hosting right as this is just a home project.

For the bandwidth I think I’m going to go for around 2-3gig to be on the safe side.

Does anyone have any idea what my next point of call should be to look for a host that will host my warez forum?

Thanks

$170 for your domain?! Is this a typo?

As far as helping you find a host that will allow warez, I couldn't tell you where to begin, and won't help you out with that. It's against my morals.

The $170 is probably because he bought it off someone that had the domain name he wanted. If this is not a transfer of ownership, DizzyEgg has been scammed. Even Network Solutions doesn't charge $170. However, the $35 Network Solutions charges is a bit much considering that a lot of companies offer them for less than $10.

Cheers again.

personally i wouldnt look for hosting on ebay and thats 1 reason one. The idea of selling hosting on ebay for bids seems cheap itself. The hosts service is probably not good as for it being so cheap. The catch is they have things up there sleeve that they dont tell you about. They may try and take your money and guarentee good service when its really garbage. Chances are there probably gonna go out of business soon also. Take my advice and look for hosting else where. Theres plenty of forums and reviews you can look at for hosting.

are you on a manic post mode ? you've dug up just about every long dead thread and posted meaningless drivel in them all

What can you buy with US$8? A good hosting plan for a year? I doubt. Look at the new thread by me about unlimited/unmetered bandwith
