cPanel usernames

When I set up one of the hosting accounts on the new server I didn't put the username in I wanted and by default WHM puts in the domain name. It has an option to change the username but it seemed like it might not be the best way to fix the problem so I deleted the account and recreated it with the username I wanted.

Has anyone ran into this problem and simply changed the username? Fortunately this was a hosted domain from my other server and the client hadn't uploaded anything yet or created any email accounts so I figured it would be a good domain to practice on.

The next thing I'm wrestling with is moving the rest of the domains. I have full site backups done with cPanel and downloaded them to my computer. Now I have to learn where to upload them so when they extract they populate properly.

WHM has a transfer tool but I don't think it would be a good idea to use it considering the other server is rather outdated, still running CentOS 5.11 and the new server I have CentOS 7.3 on it.
 
I did transfer one of my small domains using the transfer tool in WHM and it showed no errors. Once DNS propagates fully I'll check the site itself to make sure everything is working right. I did have to change the password however so I could login through ftp.
 
In most cases, changing the cPanel username is perfectly fine. You'll want to verify databases etc however as since you've changed the username, you'll likely now need to re-assign a new user to the database. You'll also want to update config files that used that dabasename, and any files that used the actual structure of the server directory (/home/username/public_html/ )

In most cases, we do not recommend changing the username. It's better to create a new one and move things over that way.

If it's only HTML based site you can directly upload (/home/username/public_html/ ) or you can try to restore your website through backup wizard
 
It is worth trying the transfer tool, we have completed transfer before from Cpanel 11 running on Centos 5.4 to Cpanel 64 running on Centos 7.2.

So I doubt you will have a problem running the transfer tool.

Or you can restore the cpanel backups in WHM under "Restore a Full Backup/cpmove File" Then under transfer method select "Restore with File" and upload the cpanel backup you have.

After using the transfer tool on one domain which transferred without flaws I ended up moving the entire server that way. It was easy, painless and fast.

You can change the username, it will not affect the account especially when it doesn't have big database, however it's not recommended, but WHM recommend to rename the account with same or shorter character length. you can know more from cPanel Documentation.
Please note that when you change a username of an account that host database, you'll need to update database information on config file of web applications running on this cpanel account.

You can use WHM transfer tool, it's a reliable tool. In case you've backups on your PC, you need to upload them to /home to let WHM find them during restoration process.
