Cloudlinux and feature planning

So, I stumbled across this blog post from Igor last night, and I have to say, what I see here makes me incredibly happy. Some of the highlights

  1. LVE Stats 2 - better tracking is needed, for sure.
  2. LSAPI - Been released for a few weeks, and this should give litespeed a run for it's money!
  3. Reseller limits - Yikes! This might be fun
  4. Simplified LVE Manager - OMG, FINALLY!!! Looking at the screenshots for this makes me all kinds of happy
  5. Improved Virtuozzo / OpenVZ support - I'd REALLY like to see OpenVZ support improved here. Like, really!!
  6. Improved Plesk and DirectAdmin support - meh, I think they're wasting their time on this one, but hey, it's their time and money ;)
  7. Bandwidth limits - incoming and outgoing limits. Say goodbye to script kiddies?
  8. Improved Ruby/Python/NodeJS support - meh, not my cup of tea, but I get that people will get it

I have to say, this company has really picked up their game here over the past few years, makes me happy for sure. Of course these are all 'planned' features, not actually implemented, but we'll see.

Cloud Linux is definitely an option for shared hosting if you have a dedicated server you should not even consider doing without. I will have to look into the new LSAPI.
 
Yes, we are excited by what we have been seeing from CloudLinux.

Numbers 3 & 5 are the most interesting.

Using the limits within limits available in the OpenVZ Kernel (2 layer limits) seeing CloudLinux within OpenVZ is very interesting.

Also seeing Reseller limits will be fantastic, from a stability and monetising point of view. I have some resellers with 100s of sites and they don't use a CPU between them. I have other resellers paying the same and they have 5 sites constantly hammering away and 10 high traffic sites etc, so can be using 400% CPU constantly. Reseller limits will allow charging for the power, not the domains and will kick the site developers to optimise or pay-up!!

Having used mod_lsapi on some servers, and LiteSpeed on others, don't confuse the two. LSAPI is from LiteSpeed and CloudLinux have adapted it for Apache.
LiteSpeed itself is better architected, has LSCache (think of varnish cache, without having to proxy) built-in, has LSCWP (WordPress plugin), and LiteMage (real-time combining of different cached objects, for Magento) and a moderate Anti-DDoS whilst being to upgrade and downgrade without interruption. It's also up there with NGINX at static data transfer and only costs $46 per server for our 16 Core 32 Thread 128GB shared servers, saves at least a server in cash!!

At $10 for CloudLinux, best bargain ever
 
mod_lsapi is great if you are already going for CloudLinux OS (on a dedicated server). It makes sense to use it, rather than pay additional $40 for dedicated server LiteSpeed license.

One feature the CloudLinux team continues to remind us of is the ability for reseller hosting clients to control LVE limits for their clients. That would be interesting to see in action.

I will say their updated, "simplified" GUI for LVE manager does look like it adds a greater level of functionality.
 
I gave CL's mod_lsapi a spin the other day for a server. Cannot say I'm impressed. I'll stick with my trusty LS for this one, thanks .

I'm sure they'll improve the hell out of it, but the configuration seems to just be a bit much for something that I couldn't really find much of a GUI for.

Not that I need a GUI for most, mind you, but, that config file can be a bit out there.

When comparing mod_lsapi to LiteSpeed.

Personally, CloudLinux is very cheap for what it does, and LiteSpeed is priced about right.
CloudLinux is still priced the same as it was at the start when it had nowhere near the functionality that it has now. I believe Igor and his team have a winning product which I am still gob-smacked isn't standard across shared hosting.
CloudLinux is worth it, even if you are adding it to a $20 VPS, in fact, it's the smaller machines which benefit the most.
