Cheap dedicated server or expensive VPS?

I would like to do some research for myself and I wonder what would you guys prefer? Cheap dedicated server or expensive VPS?
Thanks for your replies

I would suggest VPS every time.
I see no advantage at all in a dedicated server. You will generally be on a far more powerful server and you will maintain full control.
Plus most good VPS packages are fully managed while most cheap dedicated servers you are on your own.

I'm with Blue on this one, as long as the VPS provider is experienced and puts that experience to good use.

Actually there are some applications that would not be OK with being on VPS server and share the RAM (or some VPS cannot just offer a 4 GB RAM for example - not yet at least), so depending on your needed configuration there is just no way to go but a dedicated server.

Any applications specifically Art?
If an application is using more than 1gb of ram then I suppose it would not be a good option for a VPS but then again that same application would pretty much require you to have a dedicated server for a single site.

Custom-built applications that run like OS. I am building one that requires at least 2 GB RAM.

and you will maintain full control

I think that is what gets most people interested in having their own VPS, even it they end up paying a little more for it. It is almost the new fad for many right now and I am sure VPS resellers are booming with keeping up with their competition.

Thanks for your replies guys!
So you'd better go for the $60 per month VPS server then $70 per month dedicated , aren't you?
(Let's say they have the same configyration).

If you ask me, Ishall tel that I prefer dedicated server because vps shared in this or that way - the resources are shred between other VPS, and that is why only suitable and acceptable VPS for me is VPS with burst RAM, like there is at ***********.com, you know, but even so, I shall choose dedicated server if I have one as an alternative.

I am with Artashes on this one. If you need something powerful to run, then go with a server or atleast a good, high end VMWare setup.

However, for the lower end, a VPS could suffice.

VPS would be my choice, any time. It gives complete privilege over the server, customize as per how we need it, and make sure to get an environment on the server which suits our needs, with full root privileges.

Well If you are planning to pay lots of money on a VPS your better off doing that then paying a small amount for a dedicated machine. The reason why is because the VPS host machine is most likely quad core and you would be on that quad core.

I will choose dedicated servers because i have full control of the server.
VPS will share something with others, i don't like sharing my web secrets with others.

A dedicated server will be the best choice if you have the funds for it.
As Sari mentioned a VPS will be the best solution if you do not have the money for a dedicated server. You will have full root access with a VPS.

Base it on the specs, not the price. You can find nice servers with a decent price. But then you can find them not so good with the same price. Just watch what your buying. .

What are you planning on doing with the dedicated or vps?
