CentOS, RedHat, Fedora

I am new to linux and have untill now used windows and windows server. Was planning to try linux servers now and find that servers come with option to have either CentOS, Fedora, Redhat installed. Which of these three is better and how do they differ?

Pardon my ignorance but its been Windows all the way untill now, so the information you provide will really be helpful.

Linux is much faster and in my personal opinion best for web servers as Linux doesn't tend to require alot of RAM.

What are you planning to use the server for?

If you are running tests any is fine. I wouldn't recommend Fedora for a running site, as there are many flaws with it's quick releases. Red Hat Enterprise or CentoS are pretty much one in the same so I would suggest either.
 
hmmm.....so you mean Linux isn't the faster one out?

I plan to use it for developing few linux based apps and scripts, one of my projects. So, yeah i'll need an environment to test as well, but thats only once applications and scripts have been developed by our team.

This is not true! Windows 2003 x64 is an amazingly fast platform and can easily perform as well or better "with optimization" than any 64 bit Linux platform.

As for the OP's question. What Linux platform to use out of the three.

CentOs if your going with Hsphere CP.
Fedora-Core with anything else.
RedHat if you have money to spend and require lots of assistance.

So, that means i need to go with Fedora-Core, for it shall have DirectAdmin only.

Expenses is what i am looking forward to curtail, so RedHat is out of question then.
 
I wouldn't recommend using Fedora Core for any server environments for a couple of reasons. First, it is a development OS so it isn't going to be as stable as RHE/CentOS. Second, the lifecycle (how long updates come out for) of Fedora is about 1 year whereas RHE/CentOS is 7 years.
 
I would suggest the use of CentOS as it has all the features of RedHat Enterprise, but does not have the the License fee. Also, you will find most all control panels work with CentOS with no problems. Infact if you want you can use any Linux OS (CentOS, Fedora, Redhat) as they perform equally well over windows.

hmm..thats interesting. So, it boils down to CentOS now.

Fedora seems to be wrong choice i made above. I'll do some research over CentOs and commands to equip myself with some linux commands thereby allowing me to handle server requirements to an extent.
 
I finally went with CentOS (hopefully the right choice). Thanks everyone for pitching in with their valued suggestions.

Yhat is the decision I would have made. I have several servers running CentOS and it is very stable and reliable.

Couldn't agree more, why would you pay redhat for their ent. edition where you can get same thing on centos? I guess if you need tobe able to call someone for help.
