Canaca.com - reliable?

Hey I just registered, but I've been around a bit reading about various paid hosts since I'm planning to register a domain and put up a personal site/portfolio/whatever I want website as soon as possible...

I've seen great reviews about http://www.surpasshosting.com even though their prices astounded and frightened me o.O;; and now I've stumbled across something even scarier (I think?), http://www.canaca.com.

If anyone has experience with this host, let me know, they have incredible prices and rave about having

+ Reliable 99.9 % uptime
+ Backup Systems
+ FrontPage Extensions
+ 30 Day Money Back
+ 1-800 emergency support
+ Premium Bandwidth
+ Best prices in the industry (Their 'Bronze' plan is essentially (disregarding the other standard features ((which they DO have)) 5gb (wow!) storage space, 40gb (wow!) bandwidth for $3.95/mnth (wow!!!). They also have a 30 day money back guarantee.

Needless to say I don't know what to think... help a guy out here? :]

Try a search over at webhostingtalk.com. A few of their customers wrote some reviews there. If I remember it right, they were not very encouraging.

It's entirely your merit, as you were the one who decided to research the host before making the plunge. It was a very wise decision! :agree:

STEER CLEAR of Canaca

Hello Hobotics -

You got some great advice from Idcdc. Unlike you, I was one who "plunged" into what seemed like great packages for great prices. In the end, they were downright fraudulent.

I was charged $45.00 for what they claimed was the "$7.95" (Silver) package. At no time during the signup process do they point out that to get the $7.95 price, you must commit for TWO YEARS.

Setup was not routine. Took two days and several emails to get my setup info and get started. When I tried to get technical support for FTP (which didn't work) they were not very helpful. I also called to ask about the billing problems - I could not find a single person who spoke English as a primary language. This did not help routine communications, of course.

After three days - and learning they had charged my credit card $45.00 for my $7.95 plan, I asked for my "30-Day Money Back Guarantee" that they post in writing. Guess what? They refused, flat out.

They told me that I "could not prove the problems were theirs" and therefore I was "not eligible for the money back guarantee".

I had to report them as Fraud to my card company and have the charges reversed. Thank Heavens my choice of card company was a LOT better than my choice for webhost.

STEER CLEAR of these guys and please tell everybody you know.

Respectfully,

Ben
