Can I find out the domain names of people I'm sharing a server with?

If I wanted to find out who my neighbors are that I'm sharing resources with, is there some kind of reverse directory site that will enable me to use my IP address to see how many other web sites are being hosted on my server--as well as what the domain names are?

Bear in mind that it only shows you the domains on that IP. The server may very well have multiple IP's assigned to it.

It's not even remotely accurate - it misses out almost every tld/cctld
It misses out valid .com/net/orgs that are on the ip
Many hosts put multiple IPs on the same server

The *only* way to knwo what domain are on the server is to have root acess to that server

Thats true, alot of people use these services and say a host has a few domains on it, when in fact its not true. Alot of Hosts use many IPs per machine, so you could have accounts on a totally different IP but still be on the same box, sharing the same resources.

According to a security FAQ on Pair.com all you need is a $9.95 account with them to see the files of every domain on the server you're assigned to:

Question: "I was logged into my account, and when I went up one level from my home or Web directory, I could see everyone else's files!"

Response: "This is a normal and reasonable security model. Files which are published by the Web server need to be publicly accessible, as the Web server software runs without any special privileges. Your files will not be subject to modification by other users on the server unless you have set the permissions specifically to allow that, or if the files have been created through CGI scripts running as user "nobody"."

This lack of privacy is common among many Linux and Unix hosts.

This is very true! It's not worth it (research) unless you are having problems (like being hacked) and then you should contact your support right away. So if you think you may have compromised I would definatley look into it, otherwise if your just curious, good luck!
