Hi guys I just wanted to give you guys some advice on picking a hosting company of course <MODERATED> You should pick a company based on their bandwidth, their storage, number of email accounts, and of course their price. However don't pick a company soley based on low prices because they risk going out of business in many cases.

I agree with picking hosting based on price. Price is based on reliability. If you want great hosting, it's going to cost a little more.

Yes so true, but don't forget the location of the servers can also have a huge effect on price!
Location, Location, Location! Good point cats-computing, that can have a direct effect on the price and is something that must be factored in.

Reliability of the support team is probably more important than reliability of the servers. If the support team is good, downtimes will be fixed in minutes instead of hours.

but a good support team would make sure their servers worked properly, if they didn't they'd get the director/owner to purchase new ones. :)

Yep all valid points!! To hit another point again, do not go cause of price. Usualy the more you pay the better it will be!!!

Yes, but we just dropped our prices and increased features to stay competitive. Many people go just for price, and we have to cater for every market.

I'd have to agree location of server's is a great factor. Sites load much faster on a server in your own country rather then a server overseas.

Here in Australia because most sites are hosted on servers in the USA (even my own! :o) is always going to be slower then it would be visiting sites that are housed in Australia. And yes, there's a big differance.

As soon as I can afford to co-locate in my own country (Expensive here), I shall do! :).

Location is an important factor.

The closer you/ your end users are to the servers the better, however it is not the only factor.
Routing and connectivity are extremely important.
I've seen hosts using such demented routing that they seemed to be based on the other side of the globe, whereas in reality they were only a few metres away from us in the data center :p

...of course I would like you to pick bluelighthosting but I'm not going to advertise here.

Funny, ironic and self contradictory statement. You do realize that this post in itself is an advertisement for your company, don't you? I mean, the name of the thread is even "Blue Light Hosting" lol

Additionally, could your "advice" have been anymore blunt and obvious? This thread is completely useless, I call for deletion :)

This thread is being left for comic relief! LOL!

Yes location is a factor, I offer hosting from servers in my bedroom for $.99 cents a month with unlimited bandwidth and 20 gigs space, however the servers at our datacenter are slightly more expensive.

Also with location, UK is usually more expensive than US (last I checked)

When choosing a hosting company find a company that you can get along with, first impressions are sometimes decieving in the hosting industry, for example sales can respond within 10 seconds of your inquiry but once you sign up and need support it can take you two or three days to get a reply.

TalkWebHosts and WebHostingTalk are great rescources to find out how a company is from its customers.

I'll be writing a guide sometime in the future for finding a hosting company, stay tuned.
