I have seen snaps only but never been to a real datacenter in person. What about you?

Has anyone here been to a datacenter in person? Hows your experience been?

I visited Peer1 and iWeb.ca datacenters. Both in Montreal. Both are impressive looking. Can't comment more than that because I am not an expert on the subject.

It was pretty noisy in both of them. :D

I believe it were staff and not the equipments which were noisy. :P

You guys had access to DC? I mean they just allow anyone to walk in there and see how things work or do you need some permission to enter DC's buildings?

No they normally won't let just anyone in but if you are a potential customer particularly for colo you can arrange a site tour. Usually this is if you are looking for a rack or two.

I beg to differ. I am not a customer, but I usually give them an ultimatum. I tell them that I will leave a nasty comment about them on the forum if they don't show me around. :D

Just kidding. :smash:

Artashes, the sheriff's department in your city would be saluting you daily or you'll leave bad comments about them on forum..:P

Nope, I have not. I wish I was, and I still want to.

I've been to One Wilshire and also Hewlett Packard's "Building 3" in Bristol which is pretty much a modern data center and you can get very lost, very easily; working there was another story.

If you go through one door you may end up in Corner #2 which is the football table or "foosball table", another exit will take you into cool town and another will take you to their full size football field or in your case "soccer field" :p

Now on the first day I was there, it took 25 minutes to walk from the Gate to the reception desk.

Sounds like a lot of fun!!

I've been to the data center where Burger King has all their servers at (GSI Solutions) I wonder what in the world could they possibly be doing with a rack of servers, but oh well.

I've also been to the 1102 Grand Data Center here in Kansas City, which is where we will be buying some space at. Nice place of course.

I have pretty much been to every data center in my area so, I can keep going but GSI is probably the best looking data center I've seen, thus far. A place called NetStandard also has a nice place.

They are interesting to visit the first time, but after a 3am wakeup call the massive noise and the freezing cold temperatures are no fun at all.

Lots of colocation places spend extra cash to make their NOC 'network operations center' look fancy because the racks of machines are unimpressive to non-technical types. They tend to expect lots of lights and beeps :) So the NOC's often have white wrap around desks and giant projector screens etc.

If you want to be impressed ask to see the NOC, thats what they show to big clients.
