Microsoft also competes head-to-head against Amazon in the cloud market. And now, according to two people familiar with the plans who spoke to Business Insider, Microsoft is leaning on AWS, of all providers, to keep GitHub from buckling under its own growth.

The number that explains why is hard to overstate. GitHub COO Kyle Daigle said back in April that commits, the basic unit of measuring how much code developers actually push to the platform, were tracking toward 14 billion for 2026. Last year that figure sat at 1 billion. Fourteen times more activity in twelve months is not a gradual curve. It is a cliff, and infrastructure built for the old pace is the thing now absorbing the difference.

A Microsoft spokesperson confirmed GitHub runs on more than one cloud provider but would not get specific about Amazon’s role. What the spokesperson did say is telling on its own: the surge in agentic development since late last year has pushed the platform’s infrastructure to its limits. Microsoft says it is speeding up GitHub’s long-planned move to Azure, a migration that was originally supposed to wrap by 2027.

In the meantime, developers have noticed. GitHub logged dozens of major outages across 2026, enough that HashiCorp co-founder Mitchell Hashimoto publicly called the platform unusable for serious work if it keeps locking people out for hours at a stretch, every single day.

There is a second, separate story running underneath all of this. Microsoft shareholders filed a proposed class action in Seattle, accusing the company of downplaying slowing Azure growth and underselling how much AI infrastructure actually costs. That suit traces back to January 29, when Microsoft’s stock dropped 10% in a single day, wiping out roughly $357 billion in market value, its steepest one-day fall in almost six years.

The company’s own numbers give the lawsuit something to work with. Capital spending hit $37.5 billion for the quarter, up nearly 66% from a year prior and well past what analysts had modeled. Plaintiffs argue that money meant for keeping the lights on at scale went instead toward AI research and Copilot. Microsoft says the case has no merit and plans to fight it.

Whether a strained GitHub and an undisclosed AWS arrangement turn out to be connected to that spending story is exactly the kind of thing a discovery process tends to surface.

Microsoft owns GitHub.
