Akamai<\/a> had a week worth talking about. During its Q1 2026 earnings call, CEO Frank Thomson Leighton revealed that the company had closed the largest customer deal in its entire history, a seven-year commitment worth $1.8 billion for cloud infrastructure services from what he described only as a leading frontier model company. Bloomberg has since reported, citing a person with direct knowledge, that Anthropic sits behind that contract.<\/p>\n

The size alone commands attention. But the more interesting question is what it signals about where serious AI infrastructure spending is actually heading right now.<\/p>\n

Anthropic<\/a> has been locking in compute capacity across an unusually wide range of providers simultaneously. Beyond the reported Akamai deal, the company recently signed agreements<\/a> with Google, Amazon Web Services, CoreWeave, and according to separate reports, secured access to the entirety of SpaceX-xAI’s Colossus 1 data center, which houses around 220,000 Nvidia GPUs. Each of those arrangements reflects a deliberate strategy of spreading infrastructure dependency rather than concentrating it with a single provider.<\/p>\n

What makes the Akamai deal sit differently from the others is Akamai<\/a>‘s specific positioning. The company has been deploying thousands of Nvidia Blackwell GPUs across its global network, and earlier this year rolled out what it calls an AI Grid across its 4,400 edge locations using Nvidia’s reference design architecture. That infrastructure is optimized for distributed, lower-latency workloads rather than the centralized training clusters that hyperscalers typically offer. For AI systems that need to respond quickly and run closer to where requests originate, that kind of edge-distributed compute carries real operational advantages that centralized cloud regions simply cannot replicate.<\/p>\n

Leighton also referenced a separate $200 million deal announced in February with another major US technology company described as being at the forefront of the AI revolution. That earlier contract<\/a> involved Nvidia Blackwell RTX Pro 6000 Server Edition clusters, which suit the smaller, distributed deployments Akamai specializes in rather than the large-scale training workloads that dominate GPU headlines.<\/p>\n

Akamai shares jumped 27 percent the day after the contract disclosure, reflecting how significantly one deal can reframe market expectations for a company. Its Cloud Infrastructure<\/a> Services revenue reached $95 million for the quarter, up 40 percent year on year, suggesting the AI infrastructure pivot was already gaining momentum before the Anthropic news broke.<\/p>\n
