With EVS now generally available, orgs can deploy VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) environments straight onto AWS infrastructure. No need for rewriting legacy apps or overhauling your workflows—just pick up your existing workloads and move them over.

Here’s the thing: migrating workloads is usually a nightmare—staff have to get retrained, scripts break left and right, network configs get ugly. But EVS sidesteps a lot of that hassle. It supports VCF license portability, so you can just bring your current licenses along for the ride. Keep using your tried-and-true VMware management tools, maintain your current IP addresses, and still take advantage of AWS’s scale, performance, and security features. Basically, it’s VMware in the cloud, minus the migration headaches.

Several early adopters are already putting it to work. The Colombian city of Santiago de Cali shifted critical public service workloads into AWS in just three weeks, keeping three-quarters of its systems running on VMware. Aeromexico turned to EVS to speed cloud adoption without pouring more investment into on-premises infrastructure. Consulting firms like Effectual and Huron have pointed to the ability to maintain operational continuity while accelerating modernization.

Steven Jones, AWS general manager of Commercial Applications, framed the launch as a natural extension of the company’s long-standing VMware support. Ahmar Mohammad, Broadcom’s vice president for the VMware Cloud Foundation Division, described EVS as a way to extend modern private clouds into AWS while safeguarding prior VMware investments.

EVS integrates directly with your Amazon VPC, providing granular control and seamless compatibility with existing backup solutions—think Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP, for example. You don’t have to rip out your disaster recovery system—just enhance what’s already there. EVS integrates seamlessly with AWS AI services like Amazon Bedrock and Amazon Q for Business. This means you can kick off AI-driven app development without interrupting your current infrastructure. Basically, it’s an upgrade, not a total rebuild.

The service is live in Ohio, N. Virginia, Oregon, Dublin, Frankfurt, and Tokyo, with more regions on the roadmap. For organizations that want the flexibility of the cloud but the familiarity of VMware, EVS aims to provide a bridge that avoids the cost and complexity of traditional migrations.

Amazon’s just launched Amazon Elastic VMware Service (EVS), and it’s a legit game-changer for enterprises running VMware.
