Amazon Web Services<\/a> (AWS) posted $30.9\u202fbillion in revenue for Q2 2025, bringing its annualized run rate to a staggering $123\u202fbillion.<\/span> That\u2019s industry-leading size, yet growth at +17.5\u202fpercent year-over-year trails behind Google Cloud<\/a>\u2019s 32\u202fpercent and Microsoft<\/a>\u2019s 26\u202fpercent pace.<\/span><\/p>\n

CEO Andy Jassy<\/a> attributed the slower growth to the sheer scale AWS now operates at\u2014greater size naturally leads to slower percentage gains.<\/span> But he emphasized that AWS remains far ahead: its nearest competitor is only about 65\u202fpercent of its size.<\/span> That scale gives AWS leverage when pursuing generative AI ambitions.<\/span><\/p>\n

To support this ambition, Amazon ramped up capital expenditure to $31.4\u202fbillion in Q2, indicating that capex will likely hit $118\u202fbillion by year-end.<\/span> More than 40\u202fpercent of that spending is tied directly to AWS, including major commitments like $13\u202fbillion for Australian data centers<\/a> and $20\u202fbillion in Pennsylvania<\/a>.<\/span> Yet Jassy acknowledged that AWS still faces infrastructure bottlenecks\u2014power limitations, chip supply, and server yield issues remain real constraints.<\/span> He expects relief to build over the coming quarters.<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite slower growth, AWS operating income<\/a> rose to $10.2\u202fbillion.<\/span> Margins dipped from 39.5\u202fpercent to 32.9\u202fpercent, largely due to increased depreciation from heavy infrastructure build-out and foreign exchange impacts.<\/span> CFO Brian Olsavsky maintained the company anticipates margins will continue to fluctuate based on investment timing.<\/span><\/p>\n

On the AI front, Amazon rebuffed concerns that it’s falling behind competitors.<\/span> Strategic partnerships like the one with Anthropic, which trains models using AWS\u2019s Trainium2 chips, underscore its bet on proprietary infrastructure.<\/span> Jassy noted these chips deliver 30\u201340\u202fpercent better price-performance for inference workloads\u2014a crucial advantage as AI scales.<\/span><\/p>\n

Crucially, Jassy also reiterated his long-standing thesis: roughly 85\u201390\u202fpercent of global IT spend still sits on-premise today, but he expects the balance to tip toward cloud in the coming decade.<\/span> As enterprises shift workloads into the cloud, AWS ownership over applications, data, and infrastructure puts it in a dominant position.<\/span><\/p>\n
